NGATEA.

PLUNKET SOCIETY FORMED.

A meeting of ladies was held az Ngatea on Thursday afternoon to discuss the formation of a branch of the Royal New Zealand Plunket Society. Mrs E. N. Miller, president of the Thames branch, and Miss Dceble, secretary, were present at the invitation of the convener, Mrs Motion. Mrs Miller presided over an attendance of 36, and ijn opening the meeting explained the objects of the society and advocated the formation of a subbranch.

It was decided to form a sub-branch, and the following officers were appointed : President, Mrs W. G. Hayward ; vice-presidents, Mesdames Motion and Costello ; secretary, Mrs Robinson, pro. tem.; treasurer, Mrs Coppins ; executive, the president, vicepresidents, secretary, treasurer, and Me«dame,s Bidwell, Budding, Mellor, Vowles, Irwin, and Valentine; advisory board, Dr. Valentine, Rev. Beaufort, Messrs W. G. Hayward, E. Walton. H. Dent, J. Costello, J. Motion, and W McDuff.

Mrs Miller said that the General Council of the society had fixed the sum which sub-branches should pay to branches at £3O a year for one visit a week from the Plunket nurse, or £55 a year for two days a week. The Thames nurse also visited Te Aroha, so could only spare one day a week to visit Ngatea. it was decided to ask the nurse to visit Ngatea on Mondays. It was left to the executive to obtain suitable rooms.

Mrs Miller said that each branch raised and controlled its own finances. The subscription was 5s per member. At Thames over £lOO had been collected in guinea subscriptions from gentlemen. While it was not compulsory to become a member to obtain service from the niurse, it was usual. However, a donation box could be placed in the nurse’s waiting room, and would be found a source of revenue. The Government would pay the travelling expenses of the nurss or make an allowance. Many useful little books could be obtained .from the nurse ffSe or for a few pence.

Miss Deeble said that during the eleven months the Thames branch had been in operation the nur,se had treated 950 babies, had been consulted by 930 adults, and had visited 504 homes.

The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the Thames ladies for attending, after which atfernoon tea was provided.
