THE Hauraki Plain Gazette. With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY. WEDNESDAY. & FRIDAY. WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1924. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

In reply to an inquiry at last night’s meeting of the Chamber of Commerce the president said that a deputation from the chamber had waited on the Hon. W. Nosworthy during his visit to Paeroa on December 3 with reference to the formation of a direct road from Paeroa to Patetoniga, and that th.) Minister, together with Mr J. B. Thompson, had stated that the expense of formation was too great it the present time, but that there would be every possibility of getting it through eventually. It was necessary to postpone formation work until the drainage work was further advanced.

In connection with the creditable performance put up by the Hauraki Regimental Band in winning the B Grade competition at the recent band contest it is worthy of note that the instruments used at the contest were those used by the 2nd Battalion Auckland Regiment, in France. The silver instruments in question were purchased in London with regimental canteen funds. On deniobolisation Colonel S. S Allen handed the instruments over to the Hauraki Regiment. It is unnecessary to say that they arc highly prized, and it is considered fitting that further glory should be added to them. On the band’s return to Thames a brief slop was made at Paeroa foi breakfast at 7.15 a.m. On behalf of the Hauraki Regiment Colonel E. W. Porritt met them at the Criterion Hotel and extended hearty congratulations to the members on the success and honour they hail gained, and assured them that the public of Paeroa. as well as Cite regiment, were very proud of their ' achievements. Lieut. A. Clark, bandmaster, replied on behalf of the band, thanking Colonel Porritt for the welcome and congratulatory remarks, and assured him that the welcome was much appreciated and quite unexpected, in view of the early hour of their arrival.
