THE Hauraki Plain Gazette. With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service. MONDAY. WEDNESDAY. & FRIDAY. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1924. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

In answer to> Cr. Brenan the Mayor stated at last night’s meeting of the .council that the borough solicitor had been instructed to make every effort to expedite matters in connection witn the legal formalities for the closing of roads in connection with the Paeroa hospital site. Mr Robert Pollock, general manager for Stanley McKay’s Aladdin Pantomime Co., Ltd., was in Paeroa yesterday making arrangements for a production of the pant&mime in Paeroa at an eaily date. Mr Pollock is not altogether a stranger to Paeroa, as he was at one time on the staff of Mr Mitchell’s “Hauraki Tribune,” which was published in this town. This week’s issue of the N.Z. Sporting and Dramatic Review cover a wide diversity of subjects that will appeal to all. The outstanding featlira this week is the arrival in Auckland of the Japanese warships. Two sPtendi.:l groups appear of the Japanese Vice Admiral and the officers, also a group of the members of Parliament taken at the Parliament Buildings, Wellington. Racing -is well maintained in the pictorial section. Besides other attractive illustrations, the social, stage, and motion picture world have a splendid showing in interesting photographs.

The weather was dull and threatening this morning, and a heavy pall of smoke enveloped the town. About nine o’clock heavy clouds gathered, and, accompanied by several peals of thunder, rain commenced to descend, and continued steadily till after midday. The rain is particularly welcome, as the whole countryside parch< d the pastures and root crops requiring moisture to stimulate growth before autumn sets in. The farmers are rejoicing, as the rain will be of inestimable benefit ‘u them as well as the town residents.

The Paeroa Borough Finance Committee reported at last night’s meeting of the council that the icvenue for the month amounted to £1854 14s, and the expenditure to £382 0s 4d. The balance to the credit of the district fund account amonuted to £2736 16s 7d, plus £92 12s. being part of an account paid on behalf of the roading loan account. The amounts to the credit of the loan account stood at £519 2s 9d for sewerage and Ils 3d for roading.

The s.s. Taniwha, en route from Auckland to Paeroa, became stuck on a sandbank in the river on the Paeroa side of the Netherton wharf this morning, and owing to the poor state of the tides combined with shallowness of the river it is expected that she will not be berthed until late this afternoon, and will leave again for Auck.and at 3 o’clock to-morrow morning. The mail- for Auckland per the Taniwha will close in Paeroa at 5 p.m. to-day.

Building permits to the value of £903 were granted by the Paeroa Borough Council during the month.
