TENNIS.

HIKUTAIA V. NETHERTON. A very enjoyable and interesting inter-club match was played on the Hikutaia courts last Saturday between teams representative of the Hikutaia and Netherton clubs. Generally speaking, the play was fairly even. The. scoring, which preponderated in favour of the home players, did not do . justice to the visitors, of whom Mrs and Miss Matthews and Messrs W. Matthews and L. Wratt played capita! tennis, Hikutaia annexed all the singles games, but lost two of the doubles after several hard-fought contests. The hospitality accorded to the visitors was acknowledged by Mr Matthews, who eulogised the warmth of the welcome entended to the Netherton teams, and expressed his delight, m viewing with his own eyes the tremendous amount of work and energy that had in so brief a period made of-the Alley Memorial Park a playing area that any district had great reason to be proud oi. The president of the Hikutaia Club (Mr J. Elliot) acknowledged the nice things that had been said of Hikutaia. It was only by. inter-club games of the kind that tennis could be improved. and the spirit of general emulation was one to be encouraged. Tuesday’s match had been played in true sportsmanlike manner, and had proved beneficial to the players and most interesting to the spectators. He trusted the first match would be the forerunner of many others, and that all games would be conducted in similar spirit. He called for cheers for the visitors. Thfeoe duly given, the visitors duly reciprocated. Appended follow the details, the names of the Jlikutaia players being mentioned first:—Ladies Singles. Mi<s Gibb v.
