MAIN HIGHWAYS.

DISCUSSION AT PLAINS COUNCIL.

SOME MEMBERS DISSATISFIED.

'The chairman reported to the meeting o; the Hauraki Plains County Council the decisions of the Main Highways District Council. Members expressed dissatisfaction that the route had been chosen without reference to the council. The council had never been supplied with information on the matter, and had decided to defer discussion until this was rei ereived.

Cr. Hayward moved that an emphatic protest be forwarded to the District Council re the route laid down through the Hauraki Plains County, for the reason that it ;s neither the shortest nor the most central through the county, and that the route suggested be through Pekapek.i, Ngatea and Pipiroa corner. This was seconded by Cr. McLoughlin.

Cr. Madgwick said that the other roads would be just as much used as the highway. To make the rating fair oh the whole county he would suggest that the other roads bu made county roads. .Ir, Harris said that if. the council adopted the suggested of the Highways Board a lot of unpleasantness would be avoided, as that Board was an independent outside body.

Cr. Mayn said that the route through Ngatca would give the greatest good to the greatest number. If the read suggested by Cr. Hayward was adopted the Main Highways Board would have to make another road to connect with Thames and Paeroa. Or. McLoughlin said that the route proposed by the Board would go round the outside of the county. It would be better to choose the road going through more of the county. He pointed out that the rating area along the Waitakaruru-Pipiroa road only extended one sectiojn back. Cr. Madgwick said whichever road was declared the traffic from Thames to Paeroa would go along the TuruaNetherton Road.

On the motion.. being put, Crs. Hare, Hayward, Mayn,- and Madgwick voted for it, and Crs. Parfitt, Nicholson, Madgwick, Harris, and Miller against it. the motion therefore being lost.
