DRAINAGE WORKS.

ORCHARD EAST ABBA. THE FORTHCOMING POLL. A poll of the ratepayers Of a special rating area near Orchard East Roal and extending, roughly; to the Kere-peehi-Wharepoa road on the sdutn and the Hauraki Drainage Area bouu'dary on the east, will he held on Saturday, February 9, at the residence of®* M> J. Taylor, Kerepeehi-Kopuarahi Road, on a proposal to borrow the sum of £1450 for the purpose of pro-?** vic’ing increased drainage facilities. It will be remembered that much of this area, being low-lying, suffered severely during the floods last winter. At a meeting in Kerepeehi in Mav last Mr E. Taylor, the Lands Drainage Engineer, suggested that the settlers should raise a loan to do the necessary work. Later the Lands Department prepared estimates, totalling •£!??00, for widening and deepening the willow tree drain and the No. 2 To Kauri drain, for the construction of a new drain, and for improvements to flood-gates, culverts, etc. As a result of a conference with the Lands Drainage Engineer the Hauraki D-ainage Board agreed to pay for the extra cost of making a one to one batter on that part of these drains in its are a. Having been successful’in getting a subsidy of 10s in the £, the Lands Drainage Department under- ? took to do the work provided the; set tiers raised a loan for the remainder. As the sum is only £1453, and the rate required as security is only 4-5 d on the unimproved value of the land, while the benefit that will be received will undoubtedly be very great, there should be no doubt of the result of the poll.

There is every likelihood of the Lands Drainage Department commencing work on the new flood-gates as soon as the poll is carried, so as to get tire benefit of the dry weather. Little work can be done in the drains now that they are so dry.
