MAIN HIGHWAYS.
* ROUTES ACROSS 'THE PLAINS. MAIN BOARD TO DECIDE. flic statement that the No. 2 District Council had recommended that the Pokeno-Waitakaruru Road, the Hamilton-Te Aroha-Paeroa Road, and the Paeroa-Waihi route in conjunction with an extension to Coromandel should be declared mam highways by the Main Highways Board was referred to the chairman of the Hauraki Plains County Council on his return from the meeting of the district council on Friday last, Mr Miller said that the various roads had been strongly suggested by the Public Works Department, and very good reasons had been given for the choice.
The routes suggested across the Hauraki Plains were from Waitakaruru to Thames via Pipiroa and Kirikiri bridges, and to Paeroa via Kere-peehi-Kopuarahi Road, Wairau Road, Pckapeka Road, and through Netherton. Unlike all the other proposals the matter of this route had caused considerable discussion in the district louncil. The point where the Thames and Coromandel read would join the roads tb the Waikato and Eaxt Coast had not been settled by the Public Works Department.
Strong arguments in favour of the suggested routes were put forward by the Public Works Department and supported by the representatives of disinterested counties. Seeing that no finality was likely to be reached. Mr Miller moved, was decided, that the question be left to the Main Highways Board to settle.
