NOXIOUS WEEDS.

GROWTH ON THE PLAINS. At many places on the Plains noxious and other weeds, are obtaining a firm hold. Where a few years ago there were only a few roots there are no-.” huge areas of such weeds as blackberry, Californian thistle, ragwort, foxglove, and px-eye daisies to be seen. Though there are ample powers under the Noxious Weeds Act ioi to compel landowners to keep thenproperty clean, it would be thought that the average farmer would no: require compulsion to make him do more to protect his own interests, as well as those of the community. The excuse is often made/that sucn weeds do not spread as rapidly on the Plains as in other places, but, whether this is true or not the fact remains that these weeds are spreading • rapidly, and unless active and united steps are taken there is a danger of the whole country being over-run, just as many neighbouring counties : are over-run, and valuable property rendered of little value. The Govern- - ment appears to be the worst offender in this matter, afc on manj r of the Crewn reserves weeds are allowed co grow absolutely unchecked. The matter is one for the various farmers! unions and kindred bodies to take uA while the menace is in its .early stages. ■ \
