THE HALF-HOLIDAY.

SATURDAY RETAINED IN PAEROA.

At a special meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council held last night ,tha question of the statutory half-holiday for the town was decided.

Ur. Brenan moved, and Cr. Silcock seconded, that Saturday should be retained as the half-holiday for the ensuing term.

Cr. Vuglar opposed the resolution, contending that the interests of the fai-mibg community should be studied, and that in the past Wednesday had bedn proved to be the most satisfactory day for the half-holiday. Cr. Flatt said that in view of the absence of any petition or indication from the people as to which day was most acceptable he would support the resolution.

Cr Vuglar said that he would move an amendment that Wednesday be the half-day, but as this, was a direct negative to the resolution the Mayor would not accept it. Cr. Brenan said that the community’s interests should be studied, and not so much those of the shopkeepers. The resolution wais then put ami carried Cr. Vuglar dissenting.
