RAILWAY COTTAGES.

SETTLEMENT AT PAEROA.

COUNCIL AGREES TO CONDITIONS.

In connection with the site for the new- railway station at Paero.i the railway settlement commissioners again visited Paeroa on January 9. They informed the Mayor (Mr W. Marshall) that they had an option over an area of approximately 28 acres, having a frontage to Ainslie Road, approximately 9% acres being in the borough area and the remainder in the county. The commissioners asked that the Council ■form and metal the new Aorangi Read to its intersection with Ainslie Road and also fill in the gully at the intersection of these roads. Also that the Council lay a sewer to .the nearest boundary of the property to enable it to be reticulated and connected with the public sewer, and reticulate the area with a water service as required. Ihe commission definitely stated that if these undertakings are given twelve to fourteen houses will be commenced within four to six weeks. The engineers have made a rough survey of the area, and are of the opinion that a sewer can be continued from the Thames Road end of the present sewerage to the boundary of the proposed settlement for the sum of £525.

The foreman’s estimate for forming and metalling the road is £2BO, and for laying a 2in water main from Thames Road £153, but probably a larger pipe would be advisable, at least tor part of the distance. At last night’s meeting of the Borough Council it was decided that the .Commissioners be informed-that the Council will form and metal the road; that the area will be reticulated with water as required, subject to the consent of the Ohinemuri County Council being obtained ; that the Council will lay a sewer having a head at the point where the western boundary of the property joins Aorangi Road, giving a manhole for connection, the sewer to be approximately five feet below the ground at this point. This will be undertaken a|s soon as is convenient to the Council, having regard to the fact that another instalment of loan money must be raised to include the work as the cosit will be from £5OO to £6OO.
