PIPIROA WATER SCHEME
HHALTH DEPARTMENT’S REPORT. ANALYSIS OF WATER. A report by the Department ’>f Health on the condition of the water proposed to be used for the Waitaka-rurii-Pipirpa water supply scheme was read at the monthly meeting of the Plains County Council on Tuesday last. It stated that the lowland water was unsatisfactory for domestic purposes, and the bacillus coli content, in the upland water was nearly as great as in the lowland water, and, taking the chemical anid bacteriological results together, the water did not appear to be satisfactory for household purposes. Details of the analysis were given as follows :—
. Upland Water.—Bacteriological Analysis : Number of colonies on ager at 37 degrees c, 40 per c.c.; number of colonies on gelatine at 22 degrees c., liquefying, 1 per e.c.; no>n-liquefying, 95 per c.c. Chemical Analysis: Free and saline ammonia, .0036 parts per 100.000'; albumenoid ammonia, .0129 parts per 100.000; oxygen absorbed in four hours at 80 degrees F., 174 pa-ts per 100.000 ; nitrous nitrogen, nil ; nitric nitrogen, nil ; chlorine as chlorides, 2-2 parts per lOO.OOO; total solidg, 10.0, anhydrous solids, 7.5; odour a.t 100 degrees F., slight (Vegetable) ; colour, very pale yellow; sediment, very slight; poisonous metals, none; reaction, very faint alkaline. The sample is of fair quality only, but would be sufficiently pure for domestic purposes. Lowland Water.— Bacteriological examination: Number of colonies on ag«>r at 37 degrees c., 1760 per c.c.; number Of colonies on gelatine at 22 degrees e., liquefying, 40 per c.c.; non-liquefying, 3200 per c.c. Chemical analysis: Free and saline ammonia, .0043 parts per 100.000 ; albumenoid ammonia, .016 parts per 100.000 ; oxygen absorbed., .193 parts : nitrous nitrogen, nil; nitric nitrogen, nil; chlorine as chlorides, 2.4 partfe; total solids,, 15.0 parts per 100.000 ; anhydrous solids, 12.5 parts per 100.000 ; odour at 100 degrees F., distinct vegetable; coloiur very pale yellow; sediment, none ; poisonous metals, none; effect on ignition of total solids, charred with vegetable and fishy odour (disagreeable). The sample is not regarded as suitable for domestic purposes In the opinion of the chemist it is polluted with animal matter and should not be used. It is an impure water from the standpoint of organic purity. The reports were referred to Mr ISF. Adams.
