PUBLICANS IN CHURCH.
“WATCHED AND CATECHISED.” A VICAR’S TRIBUTE. “ Bless all our brothers engaged in the licensed victuallers’ trade,” was the prayer offered at a service at the Church of St. Mary Magdalen, in the East End, for which the vicar, the Rev A- Barker, canvassed local hotels. Over 100 publicans and assistants attended. Mr Barker said : “ A sermon is the last thing I want to give you. I realise that one section of the community is isolated by my brother clergy. That is why I asked you here to help you, if possible. If any trade is ’vatched and catechised it is yours. A grocer can put sand in his sugar, and a milkman water in the milk, and nothing is said; but you who perform a public duty in providing refreshment are the subject of most violent and relentless criticism.” — “Sun.”
