CHRISTMAS EVE.
STREETS THRONGED. - . , BRISK BUSINESS IN SHOPS. in spite of the fact that there had been a large number of visitors from the district to Paeroa during .the week preceding Christinas Sve, and that shopkeepers had reported trade as having been brisk, a large number of people evidently waited to do the be ik of their shopping on Christmas Ere, when the main streets, presented a very animated appearance. When the crowd was at its height in the evening it was estimated that there were about 1009 people in the streets. The shops looked particularly attractive and inviting under the glare of the electric lights, and ample proof was given that the local residents were not slow to appreciate the efforts made this year by the shopkeepers. and were "loyal enough, to spend their money freely in the town in which they live or are adjacent to. Although a heavy shower of rain fe|ls? shortly after 5 p.m. and another about 8 p.m., mothers and children, as well as fathers, were enabled to make their final purchases in comfort before the shops closed for the holidays. It is worthy of record the number of motor-cars that were to be seen about the streets on Christmas • Eve, which fact was not only evidence of prosperity, but signified that people came from considerable distances to Jo their shopping in Paeroa. The support accorded the shopkeepers should be very gratifying to them, and something of a record was established by them for Christmas-week. In spite of the fact that a neighbouring town offered facilities, such as a .special train, launches, and motor trios, as added inducements to peop’le to visit the place and do their Christmas shopping there, not more than ■- dozen people from Paeroa travelled by the special train —a further proof ■ of the loyalty and faith of the local people in their town.
