HIKUTAIA.
SPORTS CLUB. . The annual general meeting of themembers pf the Hikutaia Sports Club was held on Wednesday evening in the Pioneer Hotel, Mr Alf. Alley presiding over a capital attendance. ’ The report showed that a successful sports meeting held at the beginning of the year, the entries and acceptances having been large, and the various events keenly contested. The attendance of the public, considering the threatening state of the weather, was excellent, so, that the meeting resulted in a net profit of £22 15s 9d- Tift arrangements left little to be desired, while the musical programme by the Thames Band added to the general enjoyment. The chopping blocks also had been excellent. With the experience gained the club could anticipate a more successful gathering next Anniversary Day (January 29), the date allocated for the coming sports. The balance-sheet after entering into all details of income and expenditure showed that t;be cash in hand and invested stood at £l2B Jss 9d. Of this sum £lOO was on loan at call and bearing interest at 6 per cent. On the motion of the chairman, who congratulated the treasurer on his satisfactory credit balance, both the report and the balance-sheet were adopted nem. con. It was decided to revise the list )f financial members and to appoint such as a- general committee, the work of revision being left to Messrs Alf. Alley, H. Brash, and the secretary (Mr I. M. Robinson), Officials were then elected as follows : President, Mr Alf. Alley (reelected) ; secretary, Mr I. M. Robinson (re-elected); starters, Messrs W. K. Morrison’ and M. A. Ellis; handicoppers, Messrs L. Hardy (chopping) J. Mctneny (running), J. Bailey, M. A. Ellis, and A. R. Robinson; timekeeper, Mr S. R. Heslop; judges, Messrs A. Alley and H. Valentine; protest committee, Messrs W. H. Alley, M. A. Ellis, and J. Thomas with the president and the secretary. The sports programme was considered in detail, last year’s being adopted generally. Slight changes were introduced, a general increase being, made all round in the prize money allocated to the different events. It was decided to provide a double ring for the chopping events, Messrs W. Welch and P. Corbett being empowered to secure the necessary blocks and dummies. The admission charges to the grounds.were revised, it being decided that men pay 2s and ladies Is. The enthusiasm of those present as well as the increased stakes, which amount to over £l6O, augur well for a successful meeting. CROQUET. Mesdames Death and Fiske, of the Te Aroha Croquet Club, visited Hikutaia on Wednesday and gave the local lady players who, were splendid insight into the finer points of the game. The exposition by the\ visitors was greatly appreciated by the less experienced members of the Hikutaia Club, whp learned a considerable amount from the able exponents of the game. SALVATION ARMY. A rally of the children, who. attend the Sunday School conducted under the auspices of the Salvation. Army by Miss E. and P. Hanlon and the teachers from Paeroa, took place in the hall ori Tuesday night. There was a good attendance ot both pupils and parents, and with singing and games- an enjoyable, if somewhat noisy, night was spent. The event of the evening was the distribution of prizes won by the various pupils, and those in charge are to be congratulated on their choice of the wellbound, well-printed, and healthy volumes presented. All did justice to the good things provided in'the way of supper. EXAMINATION. All the pupils .of the Hikutaia School who sat at Kopu on Thursday for the proficiency certificate were successful, and they, as well as their teacher, are to be congratulated on the success attained. During the last three years only one pupil presented from this schpol failed to gain the coveted distinction —a state of things that must be gratifying to all interested parents. c ■ HAY-MAKING. Several farmers have commenced the hay harvest. Work of this nature given good and favourable weather, will be general during the coming weeks. PERSONAL. Her many friends will be pleased to learn that Mrs H. Brash is making an excellent recovery from the effects of the opyation recently performed. Mr and Mrs E. Adolph and family, from Kaipara Flats, are at present on a visit to Mrs W. H. Alley. (nee Adolph). • ~ “Sandy,” the eldest son of Mr Alex. . Duncan, was the prizeman of his school (Marist Brothers, Auckland) for elocution. His parents have received many congratulations on their boy’s success.
