THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. Motto: Public Service.MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, & FRIDAY. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1923. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

/The-price of butter has been increased Id pei' lb as from to-day. Mr M. Labarre, the practical watchmaker, of Thames, has an attractive advertisement in this issue especially featuring Omega watches, dress-rings, and bangles. Mr Labarre is making a speciality of repair work of all kinds. The youth William McGrath, aged 16 years, who was arrested at Mcr rinsville on a charge of theft of a jigger from the Hikutaia station, was brought before the Police Court at Thames yesterday. It was stated that McGiath obtained the jigger with the idea of making the journey to Auckland. He travelled most of the night, but eventually relinquished the machine and walked to Morrinsville. The Magistrate, Mr J. H. Salmon, ordered him to Weraroa, with a recommendation that he should not be licensed until he reached the age of 21. All who are interested in forestry activity, so important to the future welfare of the Dominion, will be pleased to hear that a small nursery is being established at the local Hign School by the pupils in the secondary department under the supervision of Mr l. W. McCaskill, Agricultural Instructor under the Auckland Board of Education, and Mr Wilks, the class teacher. The seeds being planted Include two varieties of Eucalyptus—the E Macarthuri and E Viminalis, those being considered by the Forestry Department among the best of the gums for farm use. Other trees being raised are pinus radiata and Cupressus Lawsoniana. It is intended next autumn to distribute the gums and pine,s to local farmers. The value of this kind of work by our secondary pupils will no doubt be appreciated by the farmers of .the district,' who will perhaps be able to learn through their own boys how easily these trees may be propagated and how profitable the systematic planting of suitable trees will prove.
