POST OFFICE SITE. In connection with the improvements proposed in Normanby Roa.l and Princes Street, the Mayor said that it had been necessary tp get some idea as to the exact location of the new post office, and with that end in vie.w the Department had been written to and asked for the Information. As a result the following letter was received from the assistant secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, Wellington:— “I beg to thank you for your letter of 12th inst. with regard to the street improvements proposed to be effected in the vicinity of the new post office site, Paeroa. Before deciding on the position of the new building on the site the Government architect is awaiting from the district engineer, Public Works Department, Paeroa, particulars of the levels, etc., of the, site. This .department is agreeable to hand over to the Borough Council a portion of the triangle formed by the junction of Normanby Road and Princes. Street required to enable the corner to be rounded off in connection with the Council’s street improvements proposals. It is noted that the Council intends to kerb and channel the footpath round to the street entrance of the new building in Princes Street. The position of the building on the site will be decided tentatively by the district engineer, and I would .suggest, that the borough engineer confer with the Public Works Department engineer regarding the position proposed-for the new building and the portion of the site required by the Council, it is intended to build the new office right up to the rounded off portion and up to the footpaths in Normanby Road and Princes Street. In my opinion the footpath in front of the building should not be put down permanently in the meantime, lest it be damaged by scaffolding in the course of building operations.” The Mayor said that it was very satisfactory tp know what, the position was, and the engineer had undertaken to take the matter up with the Public Works Department at once.
