KARANGAHAKE NEWS.

YOUNG CITIZENS’ LEAGUE. Since the initiation ceremony the activities of the local branch of 'the above league have been carried on with very pleasing results. The officers of the branch have the welfare of '.he young people at heart, and no effort is being spared to instil in the younger generation a reverence aud love of right. The members of the school staff are at present engaged in furnishing a club , room for the use of the members of the league, and it is hoped that whan completed the room will be the means .of developing the esprit de corps that should be found in all communities. Thanks are due to Mr Morris, chairman of the school committee, for his substantial donation towards the furnishing of the club room. The social side of the movement is also being encouraged, as evidenced by the successful picnics which were held on Labour Day and Saturday last. On both occasions a happy band visited the beautiful native bush which adorns the slopes of some of the nearby hills, and, judging by the. happy shouts of mirth and the smiling faces, these outings have already become very popular. A number of young people are at present being prepared to take the “ promise,” and it is hoped that a second initiating ceremony will be held in the near future. TENNIS. A strong tennis club has recently been formed, and, judging by the interest displayed, 'many happy hours should be spent during the coming season. The thanks of the club are due to Mr Hamilton, who has generously given the use of the courts free of charge. It is hoped to make the courts a beauty spot, so that the younger generation will, in the time to come, have a meeting place where the .spirit of manliness may be fully developed. Two courts are also in the making at the school grounds, and these should be ready for play at the beginning of the new school year. The courts will be officially opened on Saturday afternoon, November 17, when it is hoped to have a large and representative gathering present. CRICKET. The Cricket Club has successfully opened the season. A working bee recently put the ground in good order, ,so a successful season is assured. The first match of the season, Paeroa v. Karangahake, was played on November 3rd, when the home teijn proved victorious. SCHOOL ACTIVITIES. Preparations are well in hand for ■the annual school excursion to Te Aroha. The school committee has been holding socials and euchre‘parties throughout the winter months ,to raise funds for this object. On Friday evening last a very successful function' was held. The euchre prizes were won by Mrs McLeod and Mr Dare. Mr F. Clark supplied the music for the dancing in his usual pleasing style. 1 On Thursday evening next another euchre tournment will be held in the Miners’ Union Hall. On Christmas Eve a Christmas Tree function will be held, and, judging by the interest of tjie little ones, Christmas is all too far away. The pupils of the school are busily engaged in preparing for the school concert to be held early in December. Several good items are receiving attention,, so parents can look forward with pleasure to seeing their little ones on concert night. SWIMMING.
