“HARD-UP’ SOCIAL
SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. A successful social and dance, organised by St. Mary’s Catholic. Social Committee, was held in the Central Theatre on Thursday. There was a large attendance, including visitors from Waihi, Hikutaia, and Netherton. The floor was in good order for dancing, and tjiis, combined with the tuneful and catchy music of the orchestra (Mrs Budd, piano,, and Miss B.“ Jones and Mr C. Wells, violins, and Mr G. Royal, flute and jazz effects) made dancing a real pleasure, and the gathering voiced its appreciation in no uncertain manner. A euchre tournament was held on the stage, and there was keen competition, for the prizes offered. It being a “harup” social it was expected that the costumes of the dancers would have been more numerous and original; as it was, there were only two ladies and three men present in “har,d-up*’ costumes to be judged. Mr and Mrs MeCullay acted as judges, end awarded the prize for ladies to Miss Ryan, and that for the men fell to Mr J* Tysojn, who, dressed as a swagman, acred the part very creditably, and was deservedly applauded. His quaint antics caused much merriment. Shortly after the supper adjournment Mr J. Staunton, on behalf of the social committee, thanked the gathering for the support accorded the function, and expressed grateful thanks to the musicians and donors of prizes for the various competitions. He then presented the euchre prizes as follows : —Ladies : First, prize, Mrs Markovich ;' second, Mrs H. Poland. Men : First, M. Crosby; second, J. Gordon. Booby prizes were awarded to Mrs MeCullay and Mr J. Lawrence. The donors of prizes were Mesdames L. H. Smith, G. H. Taylor, and Beattie, Miss Hackett, and Messrs McWatters and Blyth. A very enjoyable feature of the evening’s entertainment ,was the singing of “My Ain Wee Hoose,” by Miss R. MeCullay, for which she received prolonged applause. She responded with a rendering of “I passed by your window.” Dance extras were contributed by kfrs J. Staunton and Misses Hawkins, I. Smith, and C. Taylor. A delicious supper , was served by the ladies of the social committee. The duties of M.C. were ably carried out by Mr J. Treanor. Dancing was carried on until the early hours of the morning.
