PAEROA CROQUET CLUB.
OFFICIAL OPENING. The official opening of the Paeroa Croquet Club was held on Saturday afternoon. In the early afternoon a shower of rain fell and delayed the proceedings somewhat. However, shortly after 3 o’clock • the weather cleared up and continued finefor the rest, of the afternoon. His Worship the Mayor, Mr W. Marshall, as well as a large number of visiting and local players, attended. The Club’s president, Mrs. Connolly, in a happy little speech warmly welcomed the visitors and trusted that they would have an enjoyable afternoon. She then drove the, first ball through the hoop and formally declared Hie green open for the 1923-24 season t The players were then arranged into A and B teams, and after an enjoyable afternoon’s play the winner of the A team proved to be Mrs Monson (Te Aroha), who was presented with a trophy donated by Mrs G. PLamb. Mrs W. Barclay was the successful player in the B team, and received the trophy donated by Ml? McGruer. A delicious afternoon tei was served in the pavilion, in the shelter of which small tables yfere set. The decorations were very daint|y, and were much admired. The success of the afternoon’s pleasure was due in no small measure to the organisation of the club secretary, Mrs G. H. Taylor, and the committee. Complimentary references were accorded the green superintendent!, Mr W. Hamilton, on the excellent state of the lawns, especially in view of the wet weather and the lateness of the season.
