BY WEST FOOTBALL CLUB. A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. As a wind-up tp a very successful year, and a means of raising money for a worthy purpose, a benefit social and dance was held under the auspices of the West Football Club in the Central Theatre last evening. From start to finish there was no’, a dull moment, and all thoroughly enjoyed themselves. A capable committee under the leadership of the Club’s energetic secretary, Mr I. Poland, was responsible fpr the details of the function, and nothing was overlooked. Some 80 couples took the floor to the irresistible strains~bf the dance music supplied by Mrs Budd (piano), and Miss Jones and Mr C. Wells (violins). Extras were played by Mrs W. H. Taylor (junr.) and Misses CTaylor, I. Smith, and L. Vincent. An outstanding feature of the evening’s entertainment was the euchre tournament conducted by Miss Shaw and Mrs Chisholm. No less than 84 players took part in the competition, a record for the theatre.’ Mrs Hale was in charge of the supper arrangements, and was ably assisted by a number of lady supporters of the club. At the conclusion of the euchre the players were served with supper first, the dancers following. Despite the big gathering there was no crowding or confusion, and the supper was dainty, delicious, and ample. After the supper adjournment the secretary called on the club's president, Mr EEdwards, to present the trophies won. Mr Edwards in a happy little speech heartily congratulated the club on its premier position in Paeroa football circles this season. He also congratulated the Nethertpn team, who were runners-up in the senior competition, and .said that although they had only just been beaten, they had put up a good, clean fight, and it was to be regretted that the final match had been played so late in -the season. The president said it gave ;him very great pleasure to present the medals, and he congratulated' each recipient in turn. The winners were as follows: Best senior forward (medal presented by Mr G. Jenkinson), W. H. Taylor, captain of the senior team. Senior back (medal presented by the president), I. Poland. Junior back (medal presented by Mr R W. Evans), J. Towers. The medal for .the most improved third-grade player was won by C. Nield. Each winner was heartily applauded on receiving his medal. The euchre prizes were then presented. The first prize for ladies, silver servers, presented by Mr W. McCullay, and a salad bowl, presented by Mr F. C. Blyth, was won by Mi’s Trcanor, and the second prize, cutglass .salt and pepper shakers, presented by Mrs Corbett, Hikutaia, and a traycloth from Williams Ltd., was awarded to Mrs Edwin Edwards.' The men’s competition was won by Mr “Ted” Edwards, the prize being a brief bag presented by Mr D. Me Watters, and Mr F. Strawbridge was a good second and received a Loewe pipe, donated by Mr H. E. Raffills. The booby prizes fell to Mrs W. Neil and Mr C. Olsen, ' The guessing competition (the number of peas in a bottle) was won by Mr F. E. Flatt, who guessed the correct number, 392. The prize, a pair of fowls and a ham,, was donated by Mr C. Hudson. The president said that he had been asked, on behalf of the club, to offer grateful thanks to Mrs Budd and her orchestra; ladies for their help in providing the supper, and all the friends and supporters of the West Club who had assisted to make the evening a success. He. wished also .to especially thank the donors of medals and euchre prizes. Dancing was then carried on until the small hours of - the morning. Messrs L. Shaw, J. Crosby, and R. B. Penlingfon carried out the duties of M.C.’s.
