OBITUARY.
MR. BARTHOLOMEW BROWN. Yet another of our grand old pioneers i>n the person of Bartholomew Brown, of Rotokohu, passed over the border to the Great Unknown on Saturday last at the ripe old age pf 96 years. He was born in the County Mede, Ireland, and emigrated to Victoria in 1859, being in one of the last batches of passengers by the Royal Charter. He worked for two year,? on the goldfields in Victoria, and then took part in the Otago rush, including Gabriel’s Gully and the Dunston. He returned to Victoria for two years, working on Gafney’s Creek. He then came over to the West Coast, and later to Thames, landing there in the latter part of 1866. He took part, ; n the working of the “Moaning Star” on Moanataiari Creek. In 1877 he gave up mining and came to Ohinemuri, taking up land at Rotokohu. After settling at Rotokohu he married and has resided there ever since. He was of a retiring but kindly nature. He leaves a wife and one son to mourn their loss.
