PROPOSED PAEROA MEMORIAL.

(To the Editor.! Sir, —I understand His Worship the Mayor will shortly call a meeting to discuss the proposed memorial. At the meeting held about two years ago a resolution was carried “ That a Memorial Arch be erected at the main entrance to the domain at a cost of £750 to £850.” A committee was formed t.o canvass for subscriptions and to carry out the proposal of the meeting. Owing to the financial slump, and the adverse opinion pf a large number of the residents who were in favour of a memorial of a useful and practical nature to the town, the above resolution has been held in abeyance. Recently, I read in the “ Gazette ” that the hinuer of Commerce and the Business Men’s Association advocated in i-avour of a public library. Lt is quite evident that the resolution passed at the meeting will not be carried out. It now remains for the committee that was formed to ascertain the views of the public generally. A public library would be an asset to the town, but owing to the financial conditions at the present time funds would be difficult to raise for that purpose. As the town progresses this should be a matter for the Porough Council to consider. Now that the post office site is secured, and an up-to-date building is to be erected in the near future, I would suggest that a memorial clock tower, with or without chimes, be erected. The situation for this PU’> pose is unique, and could be seen from all directions. A tablet with the names of our fallen soldiers could be erected at the main entrance, and arrangements made accordingly bei. re the building is erected. Before closing I would like to add that whatever is decided on we must keep in view the following: 1() The wishes of our returned soldiers and the community in general; (2) what funds will be available; (3) that the memorial should be opened free of debt. 1 trust that an earnest endeavour will soon be made to come to some definite conclusion. F. C. BLYTH.
