OBITUARY.
}IK IL A. SHAW. Mr H. A. Shaw, who passed away in his sleep at Ngatea on Friday last at the age of 58, was born in Kent, England. He was the son of an Imperial army surgeon, and was educated in Vienna to be a doctor. In 1881 he enlisted in the Royal West Kent Regiment, and in 1885 served through the Louis Reil insurrection in Canada, where he received two wounds •from Indian' knives. For the next few years he served in the Royal ..Northwest Mounted Police. Later he travelled extensively, and arrived in New Zealand in 1890. In 1897 he was a sergeant in the Paeroa' Volunteers, and later gained his commission in Auckland. In 1900 he left Auckland in command of the fifth contingent of mounted infantry (.the rough-riders) for Wellington, en route to South Africa. However, in Wellington ill-health compelled him to relinquish his. command. Lieut. Shaw was a close friend of George Bradford, of Paeroa, who was the first man to be killed in the Boer War. During the past twenty-three years Mr Shaw resided. in many parts cf the Auckland province. < He had always been associated with volunteers and rifle clubs, and won many trophies. 111-health, however, compelled him to give up hard work, and two years ago he settled in Ngatea. His peaceful death on Friday last was a happy release from a long and painful illness. He leaves a widow and one son.
