PAEROA-POKENO LINE.
REFERENCE IN HOUSE. ESTIMATES BEING PREPARED. preference to the proposed railway from Paeroa t.o Pokeno was made by the Minister for Public Works, the Hon. J. G. Coates, in the House of Representatives qn Saturday. He said two lines did not appear in the schedule of estimated costs in the Public Works statement. They were the Paeroa-Pokeno line, cutting out the loop t,o Frankton, and the Waiau Downs line. The construction of both these lines was under consideration, but the estimates for them had not yet come to hand. Mr Coates said there was another point that was not made clear in regard to the department’s programme. This was that the heavy expenditure on three of more important lines would draw to a close in three years. It would then be possible to switch over men, material, and plant to carry on the next important work.
