POLICE COURT.
—- -o ■ TO-DAY’S SITTING. (Before Messrs W. Marshall and G. P. Lamb, J’s.P.) DRUNK AND DISORDERLY. At the Police Court this morning Edward Douglas Tregowath was charged with using obscene language on the Paeroa railway platform. Constable McClinchy, who prosecuted, said that the accused had come from Hikutaia in ,the train. He was very drunk, and was brandishing a bottle about and hit one of his own mates. When he arrived at the railway station he took off his coat and wanted to fight. His friends tried to keep him quiet, but it was no- use. The language he used was disgusting. He urged that this conduct should be put down, and, as a warning to others, that a .substantial penalty be imposed. Mr Porritt, who appeared for accused, said that his client would not dispute what had been said. He had no memory of what occurred. In. company with others he first went to Te Aroha and then to Hikutaia. There were no previous convictions, and accused was deeply sorry that it had occurred. Mr Marshall said that in view of the fact that it was a first offence the Bench was prepared to deal lightly with it, but they were going to stick to the police in cases of this kind. He hoped it would be a warning. On the charge of drunkenness accused was convicted and discharged, and for obscene language was convicted and fined £5, a'nd costs 14s. Accused was given till September 6 to pay the fine.
