Amongst the latest books added to the reference department of the Public Library are four volumes of the National History of England, civil, military, and domestic, with some 500 engravings illustrative of antiquities, architecture, scenery, manners, customs, etc.,, published in 1887. There is also an atlas, published in the same year, which has 120 maps of historical, classical, and physical geography, with descriptive letterpress and full-page coloured illustrations of -many principal cities of the world. These valuable additions to the library are from Mr R..W. Evans. A new penny stamp has been designed to mark the introduction of penny postage in New Zealand. Its chief feature is a map of the Dominion,'with side borders-in Maori scroll. The colour of the stamp will be pink. Prior to the commencement of the business at last night’s meeting of the Borough Council the Mayor referred to the death of the only child of Cr. Bain. A motion of sympathy with Cr. Bain, his wife, and relatives was passed, the motion being carried in silence. A similar motion to Mr H. Poland, M.P., on the death of his father was also carried. Householders, particularly those with large families to support, will no doubt be pleased to read that the N.Z. Co-op. Dairy Co., Ltd., has decided on a reduction of 2d per lb in the retail price of butter as from yesterday. This means that the ruling prices now are : Anchor (first grade) Is 7d, Acorn Is 6d, Daffodil Is sd. Over £7009 is due to the Thames Hospital Board for outstanding accounts. At the last meeting the Board decided to recover this through the court,. The population of Sydney and suburbs at the end of last year was 955,900. With this week’s issue of the “N.Z. Sporting and Dramatic Review” the football enthusiasts will be specially pleased, generous space having been allotted to this most popular pastime. Several pages are devoted to the Auckland v. Southland Rugby match, and the Wanganui v. Auckland Soccer match, played in Auckland last week. The' Otago High school diamond jubilee celebrations will comman I attention from Southern patrons, while Wellingtonians will be 'interested in the series from “The Man from Toronto,” as played by local amateurs. The Auckland Ladies’ Golf Championship at Middlemore is given outstanding prominence in a section of photographs. The North Island boxing amateur championship will also gain plenty of attention.
