HIKUTAIA NEWS.

THE WEATHER. As recorded at the school there were no fewer than 24 wet, days during July, the remaining seven days being dry, and the rainfall totalling 5.28 inches. The average daily temperature as taken in the shade at noon each day was fl degrees F,. while the barometric pressure averaged 30'.35. Laterly the weather has been dry, the cold, clear days making a pleasant contrast to the wet weather prevalent, at the beginning of the month. PERSONAL. The postmistress, Mrs, Brown, is at present absent on holiday, her locum tenens being an official from the head office at Thames. .Mr A. E, Faville left Hikutaia at the end of last week to take charge of the factory, at Wharepoa now in course of erection. His position at the local factory has been filled by Mr Clarry, who came from Rukuhia, where he acted as first assistant to the present manager at Hikutaia. Miss E. Walker, who has been connected with the local school for over a year, has been appointed to Waitui, near Taumarunui. Miss Walker will be greatly missed from the Tennis Club, where as first lady player she did a great deal to enhance the prestige of the club,, and from social committees, on most of which she was a prominent worker. Mr . and Mrs W. H. Alley left Hikutaia on Tuesday on a short visit to Auckland. farming. Though essentially a dairying district there is a considerable number of sheep scattered over, a wide area,, and among these lambs are making their appearance in fairly large numbers. BALL. At a meeting of the committee of the Tennis Club held on Monday night, Mr A. W. Alley presiding, it was resolved to hold a giand masquerade ball on September 19th. Subcommittees were appointed to compile a suitable programme and to arrange details. SOCJAL. The annual social- in aid of the funds of the local Catholic Churca was held in the hall on Thursday of last week. Favoured with capital weather a large number was present to show their practical sympathy with the cause. The arrangements made by the committee; of which Miss N. ' Corbett was secretary, were complete t 0 the last detail, so that everyone went, home delighted with the success of the evening. The music, supplied by an orchestra from Waihi, left nothing to be desired,, while the ample and dainty supper was the theme of many enconiums. As M.C; Mr B. McSweeney was as efficient as he was indefatigable in the discharge of his duties. The euchre tournament was exciting, no fewer than three ladies playing off for first place. Miss Lucy Alley won the first prize (a set of aluminium .pans), the gentlemen s prize (a handsome pipe) being annexed to Mr T. Alley. ing the expense curtailed, the financial result should prove satisfactory. SALE. A special sale of dairy cows was held at the yards on Wednesday, when there was a good attendance. Prices were well maintained, there being a good demand for springers.
