KEREPEEHI. THE LEADSWINGERS. The executive of the Merepeehi Leadswingers’ Club has decided to hold a smoke, concert on August 9. Arrangements are being made to ensure the function being a success. Early application for tickets,, is requested, so that the committee will know how many to cater for. PIPIROA SPORTS CLUB BALL. Pipiroa is becoming well known on the Plains for the quality of its dances, but the first, annual ball of the local sports club excelled all previous functions. Nearly 90 couples assembled on Thursday last from all parts of the Plains and from Thames,, and from the grand march until the early hours of the morning all went merrily. Much credit is due to Messrs G. Goldthorp and W. Ganley for the efficient manner in which they carried out the. duties of M’s.C. The music of the Thames Fire Brigade’s Orchestra was irresistible. About midnight an adjournment ment was made to the supper room, where dainty edibles, provided by the ladies’ committee, were found and done justice to. The Sports Club is to be congratulated on the success of its function. TURUA. CLEARING SALE. There was a large attendance at a clearing sale conducted by Messrs A. Buckland and Sons on account of Mr W. Taylor at Turua on Monday. No stock of any quality was offered, and competition was not keen. Cows brought up to £l2. A horse sold for £4l. Furniture and sundries sold readily.
NGATEA. FARMERS’ VETERINARY CLUB. A meeting of the executive of the above club was held at Ngatea on Monday last. Mr C. H. Waite presided, and there were present ;• Messrs Donaghy, R. Burke,, H. Schwartz, G. T. Davidson, p. Henry, and the secretary, Mr C. A. Gibson. The chairman said that he had obtained legal opinion that the club could sue for money due as payment for the services of the veterinary surgeon. The clerk reported that the Registrar had returned the club’s papers, and stated that incorporation could not be granted until provision had been included in the articles to provide for the disposal of any assets at the time of winding-up. it was decided to hold a special general meeting on Friday next to discuss the matter. The veterinary surgeon was granted a few days’ leave to attend to urgent private business. It was reported that several cases of ergot had occurred through feeding hay that had been cut too late in the season. All the cases were successfully responding to treatment. Accounts totalling £l7 were passed for payment. ENTERTAINMENT. An entertainment arranged by the Mutual Improvement Society in aid of the street lighting fund was held in the Ngatea Hall last evening. Humorous speeches were made by Mrs McKerchard. Mrs Terrill, and Mr Payne. Community singing under the leadership of Mr Crabb was then engaged in till supper time, when the floor was cleared for dancing. WAITAKARURU. CHURCH SITE. A site for n church at Waitakaruru has been obtained. between the two bridges. Efforts will be made to secure funds to build a small undenominational church. THE SCHOOL. Some time ago the Waitakaruru School Committee decided to ask the Education Board for some trees to plant for shelter. Advice has just been received that the request has been granted, and the trees will be forwarded when the committee de; sires, on condition that they are planted and fenced at no cost to the Board. SICKNESS. Influenza hi a mild type is verv prevalent at Waitakaruru. Over 20 children are absent from the school for that reason.
