FOOTBALL.

PLAINS RUGBY UNION. MEETING AT NGATEA. A meeting of the Hauraki Plains Rugby Union was held at Ngate.a on Tuesday evening, Mr J. Costello presiding over the ' following members: Messrs J. H. Nicholson,, G. Porteous, W. Thompson, G. Gray, 11. Berney, and D. A. Vincent (secretary). The Waihi Rugby Union wrote tendering their hearty thanks for the kind manner in which the Waihi representatives were treated at their recent match at Ngatea. The secretary was instructed ‘e acknowledge receipt and convey the Union’s appreciation. The Thames Valley Rugby Union secretary wrote enclosing a cheque for £5 for a school grant for the season 1923. It was also stated that, an appeal had been received from the secretary of the Pearson Memorial Fund for the Blind asking that the cause be considered when the proceeds of Charity Saturday matches were distributed. It was decided to hold over the school grant till next, season, and the matter of Charity Saturday was held in abeyance for the time being. The Thames Valley Rugby Union wrote stating that the match against Wanganui would be played on Wednesday, August 15, at Te Aroha. It was also stated that, the Auckland Union had confirmed September 8 as the date for the Auckland v. Thames Valley match at Paeroa. The referees’ reports .were read, and the matter of the players who were ordered off the field at Ngatea on Saturday was discussed. Tt was decided that in the case of N. Ryan and McCollum the punishment already inflicted was sufficient, and that G. Elvin be given a severe caution. Mr H. Berney moved that the Thames Union be invited to send an “A” grade team to Ngatea on a date to suit themselves, provided it does not clash with representative fixtures. Seconded by Mr W. Thompson and carried. Mr Porteous asked why the lurua fixture for the previous Saturday had been altered, and it was explained that the alteration was made in the best interests of the game and with the consent of a quorum of the Union. The Kerepeehi Club was granted permission to play Coromandel on August 11 at Coromandel. REFEREES ASSOCIATION. The weekly meeting of the Hauraki Plains Referees Association was hedl at Ngatea on Tuesdav evening. Mr G. T. Davidson presided, and there were present, Messrs E. McConnell, J. H. Nicholson, G. Porteous, W. Thompson, G. Gray, J. Costello ,D. A. Vincent, E. Phelan, J. Banks, and H. Berney. The following referees were - appointed for Saturday:—Turua v. Waitakaruru, at Turua (Mr J. Banks) ; Kerepeehi v. Ngatea at Ngatea (Mr E. Phelan) ; Ngatea v. Turua, third grade, at Turua (Mr G. T. Davidson). The referees’ reports were read and received, and a, few points in connection with the rules of the .game were discussed.
