PLAINS FOOTBALL. filter-club football was carried a step further on Saturday, when the Waitakaruru team visited Kerepeehi and the Turua teams visited Ngatea. InQjoth cases the visitors were defeated. interest fn the game has somewhat flagged of late owing to the number of'representative matches and wet days interfering: with club fixtures. Many players are at present on holiday; and several are ill, so all clubs; are' finding it difficult to collect a team'. On Saturday so many juniors played in the senior matcnes that ii was impossible to hold the junior fixtures. The weather on Saturday was ideal, but the fields were wet and slippery, particularly at Kerepeehi. The competition ha£ now reached, an interesting stage. ■' Turua still leads with eight points, but has oniy one more match to play. Ngatea. an-l Waitakaruru have each six points to their credit, .-and .' three matches ,to play, while patetonga and Kerepeehi, with five points each, have two matches to play. KEREPEEHI' V: ‘ WAITAKARURU. This was a .hard, even game, marr-. ed by the state of. the, ground. The. Kerepeehi .forwards were heavier, and had the advantage, but they tired towards the end of the game. Waitakaruru - played well, though somewhat patchy. W. .Hurikino, V. .Dent. Kerepeehi kicked off, and from an interchange of kicks several scrums ensued, Waitakaruru eventually getting a free kick and sending the ball put in kerepeehi’s quarter. Waitakaruru pressed, but Carr with a long kick relieved for the moment. Waitakaruru returned to the attack, but Adlum saved by finding the line Kerepeehi with a free -kick carried play to mid-field. From an interchange of kicks a scrum was ordered, kerepeehi got the ball but Waitakaruru gained /ground 'by line play. The home backs made a fine passing rush and carried play into Waitakaruru’' 1 . twenty-five', .where the were awarded a free kick, but gained no advantage, gteedman got posses-, sion and carried over, but Buchanan forced.' The drop-out was returned by Thorburn to 1 Waiwai, who carried the'ball down the field and passed to Masters, who sent it out in Waitakarufu’s twenty-five. Waitakaruru attacked, and Wallis and Buchanan had carried play to the half-way line when the bell rang for the change over. ' . . Waitakaruru followed up the kiCKoff and gained a free'at. the twentyfive line, but Wallis’ kick aid not rise anil Kerepeehi returned to the other end of the field, where C. Stretton saved by finding the line.. Much line play eventuated,, during which HBuchanan had to retire. J. McConnell'took his place. From, the scrum fast play followed in mid-field until kerepeehi got the ball and carried it up’ the field, but Waitakaruru with a penalty kick relieved to half-way. Kerepeehi returned tp the attack, and a free kick taken by Rapana fell short, Waitakaruru forcing. An interchange of kicks followed the dropout Until from a line-iout the Kerepeehi backs with a passing rush carried the ball out in their opponents territory. From the throw-in Waitakaruru broke through and carried to Keepeehi’s quarter, where a free kick found the line. Majury relieved; but Waitakaruru Returned, to the attack and a scrum ensued from which Waitakaruru gained a penalty, which went but as time was called. By this time the field had become considerably ploughed up, and all being agreeable play was recommenced on the other ground. Kerepeehi kicked off against the-sun, and sev-, eral scrums' ensued in mid-field. Waitakaruru pressed, but Kerepeehi with a penalty kick sent the ball into Waitakaruru’s twenty-five. Tight play ensued near the line, ending in Hurikino scoring. The kick by Fisher failed Kerepeehi 3, Waitakaruru o.' From the kick-out play centred in. mid-field, a sally by Waitakaruru being stopped by Adlum. Thorburn got the ball and carried it to Kerepeehi’s quarter. The defenders by line play reached half-way, where a passing rush was- stopped by F. Stretton. Waitakaruru followed up a free kick, but they mulled and Masters forced; Play ranged up and down the field, neither side holding the advantage till the call of time for change over. The kick-off was followed, up, but Adlum saved by finding tne line at the twenty-five flag. Kerepeehi got the ball 1 from the line-out and carried down the field, where Garr, marked. The kick was returned and Waitakaruru gained a free kick. A man in front resulted .in a scrum, h on which Waitakaruru got the ball and Compelled Adlum to force. From, now on Waitakaruru had the.best.of the game, and three times Kerepeehi forced, Waitakaruru, however, did not score, and -when time was called the game remained at Kerepeehi 3, Wai' takaruru o‘. Mr R. Phelan was referee. Among thbse conspicuous for good plity; Were Dent, Steedman, Adlum, and Carl- for Kerepeehi and G. Buchanan, Coxhead, and Berney for the visitors.
