WORKS IN THE BOROUGH

MONTHLY STATEMENTS* j The following statements were y submitted to the Paeroa Borough Council at its meeting, last night. iVORKS COMMITTEE’S REPORT. Your Committee begs to report that during the past month the weather has been most unfavourable for general outside work, and has no doubt considerably affected the amount of work which can bo accomplished by the borough .staff. The continual rain has also sericusly affected the roads and footpaths, and we view with great concern the deplorable state of the streets. Already approximately £l5O has been spent on patching roads, for which work £4OO was allocated qn the estimates. Owing to the exceptional wet season it appears thn'f. this will not be sufficient to meet the needs. Of the metalled streets Station Road has suffered most severely, and is now in need of considerable repairs. Coronation Road has been almost impassable, but temporary repairs have been made to fill, the worst holes. Puke Road is cutting and requires early attention. 'J Unmetalled roads, such as King and Russell Streets (the latter' has been subject to heavy traffic for building purposes), have become a quag* m’re, and the road to the night-soil dump has become impassable. These matters are difficult, and urgent, but, unfortunately, cannot be tackled properly without loan money for formation purposes. For the time being it is impossible to secure further supplies of metal for patching from Karangahake. The only present source of suitable supply is from Waihi, and as this is decidedly limited it is therefore impossible to proceed satisfactorily.with the patching of roads, but your Committee proposes to go on with the road patching during the next month as fast as suitable material can’be obtained. . It is proposed during the, coming month to do the’ upper Normanby Road footpath and the Puke Road and Flora Street drains.; also Puke Road footpath, ifthe .weather is. fin3> enough it is t also proposed to do the Thames Road, footpath. . Several small, drains are in a very bad state, and it is proposed tt.o do these during the ensuing month, along with a .number of small general maintenance jobs. FOREMAN’S REPORT. The work for the past month has been, in the nature of renewing footpaths,. metalling, and general main-, tenance. -..J Coronation, and Arney. Streets, and Miller Avenue have .been cleaned and screenings put on. Corbett Street has been trimmed and partly screened, and the water-ta,bles cleaned. Station Road' between Rye Lane and Belmont Road has been renewed and the water-tables cleaned. Moore Street footpath has been, t; immed and made ready 'for screenings. NorwoodRoad Tbotp&fh has been reformed and ’prepared f6r ’ gravel/ Thames Road has bee-n patched with metal, but will require a few more yards to complete the work. Normanby Rpad has been patched in the : bad places. Te Aroha Road has been attended as far as our supply-of metal ’would allow at present. ■ r

Owing to the shortage or gravel and metal we were not able to patch our roads and paths as rapidly, as we expected. One hundred and sixtyeight yards of metal and forty-five yards of screenings were received during the month. T recommend the following work for this month : Cleaning drain and paths Puke Road and Flora Street; attending to the drainage on Te Aroha Road; and reforming footpath Upper Normanby Road. BUILDING COMMITTEE’S./REPORT. Your Committee begs to report that the following application has been received during the month: R. ■I. Roberts, to make additions to offices occupied by Mr E. W. Porritt, solicitor; Your Committee has granted this subject to compliance with the by laws. The value of tbe permit granted amounts to £285.
