PAEROA HIGH SCHOOL.
MEETING OF COMMITTER The monthly meeting ofi the Paeroa District High School Committee was held in the Borough Chambers on Saturday evening. Mr C. H. Pascoe presided over the following members : Messrs E. E. Gillman, L. C. Cane, WT. Power, W. McKenna, R. G. Southby, C. Mettam, and W. L. Lawrence (secretary and treasurer). Mr G. H. Taylor (headmaster) was also in attendance. BOYS’ PLAYGROUND. .. ’ A Itetter was received from Mr JFarrell, the Board’s architect, authorising a grant of £lO towards the cost of sanding the upper portion of the boys’ playground. It was decided to thank Mr Farrell for his efforts in obtaining the money, and to carry out the work as’ soon as the weather permitted, Mr Gillman and the headmaster to attend to the matter. MEETING PLACE. The Borough Council advised that it approved of the application from the Committee for the use of the Borough Chambers in which to hold monthly meetings,, and granted the use of same. It was decided to write and thank the Council for its assistance. MANUAL SCHOOL. The secretary reported that no further word had been received from the Education Department or Board with reference to the establishment of a manual school in Paeroa. In accordance with: the resolution passed by the Committee some time ago, which resolution was also endorsed by the housholders at the annual meeting in April, the children of the school were not being sent, to Thames for manual instruction during the winter months. On the motion.of Mr Gillman, seconded by Mr Power,, it was decided to write to the following local bodies and ask for co-operation and support of the Committee’s' endeavour to have a manual training school established in Paeroa: Paeroa Borough Council, Paeroa Chamber of Commerce, Ohinemuri and Hauraki Plains County Councils, Netherton Ratepayers’ Association, and the school committees at Netherton, Komata, and Tirohia. CARETAKER RESIGNS. Mrs E. May, who has teen caretaker of the school for the past eight years, has resigned the position as from July 9. , The resignation! was accepted with regret, and it was decided to place on record the long and faithful service rendered to the school by Mrs May. Tenders for the position are to be called, to close on June 20. FOOTPATH SWEEPING. Mr Gillman drew attention to the habit of many shopkeepers who swept their main street footpaths find shook mats, thereby raising clouds of germladen dust which was undoubtedly prejudicial to the public health. The practice complained of chiefly took place as the hundreds of children passed along -the main streets on their way to school in the mornings. It was decided to write to the Borough Council, asking to have the nuisance abated somewhat. If, suggested that the footpaths should be liberally sprinkled with water to lay the dust, and that such sweeping should be done either before 8. a.m. or after 9 a.m. SANITARY CONVENIENCES. . It was decided to write to the Board and remind it of the promises to instal patent w.c.’s throughout, and also an additional latrine. GROUND IMPROVEMENTS. Some discussion took place as to the ways and means of Raising money to carry out further necessary improvements t,o the school grounds. The headmaster said that he had received an inquiry from an Auckland firm offering to purchase empty bottles. He suggested that the school children should be allowed to gather bottles from the residents. The proceeds from the sale of the. bottjes, “plus the Government subsidy, would be handed over to the Committee for expenditure on school ground improvements.. Mr, Taylor was thanked for the suggestion and his offer of help. On the motion of the secretary, sec(t, was decided to leave the matter in the hands of Mr Taylor, with power to act, the Committee to give as much assistance as possible. It was also decided that the committee donate a prize to the class collecting the largest number of saleable bottles. ACCOUNTS. Accounts totalling £ll Is 4d were passed for payment. VISITING committee; Messrs gouthby and Mettam were appointed a' visiting committee for the ensuing month. SCHOOL ATTENDANCE. The headmaster reported that the average attendance •of children was keeping up satisfactorily for this time of the year. THANKS. It was unanimously dccide'd to write and thank His Worship the Mayor (Mr, W. Marshall) and Major Andrews, N.Z.S.C., for the interesting and impressive addresses delivered by them to the children on the occasion of Anzac and Empire Days.
