EMPIRE DAY.
AN AFTERNOON AT SCHOOL. Empire Day was fittingly celebrated at the local school when the lesson books were carefully packed away. During the morning addresses were given by His Worship the Mayor. (Mr W. Marshall) and teachers on the object of thjs great, day in the British Empire. During the afternoon an impromptu concert was held by the pupils, and considering there was not the least preparation some splendid items were given. The programme rendered was as follows:—
Recitation, “The Crow’s Children/’ by Queenje Davidson; Recitation, “The House that Jack Built” (modern version), by Leslie Marshall; song, “Perfect Day,” by Ethel Findlay, Edna Moore, and Maisie McKee; recitation, “The Charge of the Light Brigade,” by Hilda North; dance, “Folly,” by Adrja Nicholas; recitation, “When Pa is Sick,” by Doris,Rowe; song, “Memories,” by Muriel Bertelsen; recitation, "The Torch of Life,” by Alma Pennell; mouth organ solo, “Home Sweet Home,” by Leonard Roberts ; recitation, “O’Grady’s Goat,” by A tan North ; song, "Don’t You Remember the Time,” by Edna Moore; recitation, "Sophia's Sweetheart,” by Aroha Nicholas ; dance duo, "Rendezvous,” by Adria Nicholas and Raye de Castro; song, “I lost my headt in Maoriland,” by Gilbert Taylor; reading, "Tim the Dog,” by Ben Gwilliam ; comic recitation, “Dying*” by Mu!riel Taylor ; monologue,, "A trip to Blackpool,” by Edna Hayward; comic recitation, by Erald Taylor; song, “Maori Ditty,” by Shu Tukukino; communtiv “sing,” “Leave me with a smile”; “God Save the King.”
