HAMILTON STOCK SALE. The Farmers’ Co-operative Auction-, eering Co., .Ltd., reports :— At our Hamilton sale on Tuesday. May 15, we had an average yarding of sheep, but only a small yarding of cattle. Prime sheep were not strongly in evidence, the bulk of the entry being in forward condition only. Wethers made to 295, ewes 23s 6d to 24s 6d. empty ewes 16s 9d. A small line of aged ewes in lamb sold at 19s 6d. Beef also was. mostly of plain quality, steers making to £5 5s for light weights, good cows, to £5 2s 6d, empty cows from- 345. The yarding of pigs was not so large as usual, very few* heavy baconers being penned.. These were in good demand, prices making. from £3 9s to £3 19s for, heavy weights, light from £2 9s to £3 4s. Porkers were yarded in good numbers, but did not meet with usual demand, realising from 34s >to £2 Ils. Store pigs sold rather better than usual, slips inaking up to 295, Wean--ers were very scarce and made better money than in the previous week, making'up tp i4s for good lots; ; Red tape, as everyone knows, sometimes runs to inordinate length, but. till now we never heard of it causing a Government Department to dishon-: our the Government’s own paper. The blher morning a member of a well-' known family had occasion to catch , an early train out of Wanganui (relates the “Herald”). Finding himself late, he had to make a dash for it, and had just time to catch the train without getting a ticket. He proceeded to purchase/one from the guard when that official came round, and then found that, in his hurry, he - had also .forgotten to 'furnish himself with cash. But he had several postal notes, more than enough to pay. for the ticket. Imagine his consternation when the guard informed him ; that they could not be accepted in payment ! The result was that the young fellow had to leave the train at Aramoho,* disappointed as to the object of his journey, but with new knowledge that '.the Government thinks its own paper is .of so little worth that it - refuses t,o recognise it when tendered. The Runanga Band, which returned to the West Coast with a flourish of trumpets from its victories at, the recent Dunedin' contest, has fallen on evil days, and reports from well-; informed sources state that the bandis now practically non-existent as a combination (says the Greymouth “Evening Star”). It is understood that the discord has made itself apparent over the question of finance-in connection with the trip to Dunedin. The expenses of the players were provided, but some of them were not satisfied and requested that they should also be paid for the time lost from their work while away from Runanga. They were informed that this was impossible, and they, therefore, resigned. Efforts are being made, it is understood, to restore greater harmony, and the general public,, which has watched ithe progress of the band with ranch interest, will hope that the peacemakers will be successful.
