HIKUTAIA CREEK.
STOP-BANK WANTED. REQUEST TO OHINEMURI CQUNTY. At last Thursday’s meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council Messrs Hanlon, Thomas, and 1. M. Robinsor. waited on the Council as the representatives of about 20 settlers in the Kaimanawa district. Mr I. M. Robinson, on behalf of the deputation, asked the Council . for monetary assistance in carrying out the work of stop-banking the Hiku t.aia Creek on the south side from Alley's corner to the Komata Creek. They also intended filling in the present gaps in the bank, for a total distance of about 70 chains. The settleis were going to' do the work themselves, and required finance to defray the cost of necessary metal and tyncing. By improving 'their own properties, he contended, they, would save at least four miles of county roads. The chairman said the matter had already been referred to in the engineers’ report. The engineer would be asked to give his...opinion on the project -■ The engineer said the damage had been caused by the overflowing oC the Hikutaia Creek. Tht? damage done was very considerable, both to the settlers’ properties and to the council’s rpads. A very large volume of wa’er had come down from the hills. ■; Cr. Corbett said the council should be satisfied that the stopbanks were going to be satisfactory as well as practicable. The chairman said thjit. the settlers were all combining to put, up satisfactory stopbanks. He said the engineer was fufly conversant with the conditions. Mr Thomas, one of the delegation, said the reason the settlers felt justified in asking the council for monetary assistance was because of the improvements the stopbanks would be to that portion of the-coun-cil’s roadj . > The chairman said he thought the settlers were to be commended for their enterprise, and he moved that the Council donate £2O- towards the t erection of the stop-bank, provided a legal opinion was obtained as to ai]y further liability that might be thrown on to the Council. Cr. Johnson seconded, and the motion was carried. Mr Thomas thanked'the Council for its sympathetic hearing and offer ' of assistance.
