The Railway Department draws attention in the advertising columns of this issue to a special advretisemeut in connection with timetable alterations operating from May 7, 1923. Dicing the month of April, 1923, 51 cows, 35 steers and heifers, 154 sheep, 15 lambs. 2 calves, and 11 pigs were slaughtered at the local abattoirs. The attention of the ladies is drawn to the meeting tp be held in the Coronation Chambers on Tuesday at 2.30 p.m. to discuss the proposal to form a branch of the Plunket Society in Paeroa. Mrs A. Gordon, Mayoress of Te Aroha, will address .. the meeting in regard to the proposal. It is to be hoped all ladies interested in the above will attend. The ranger appointed recently by the Turua Town Board is proving an efficient man. Among the first mob of cattle collected from the roads were noticed a bull belonging to the chairman of the Town Board and cows belonging to members . The rainfall for the month of April, as gauged at Kerepeehi, was 9.76 in. This is the heaviest on record since March, 1915, when 10.67 in. were recorded, and is accounted for by the exceptionally heavy downpour of 6.94 in. on the 20th. In connection with the recent floods, ■on one particular portion of Thames Road a washout occurred, and to warn the travelling public of the danger a lamp was set up at, night to mark the spot. During Friday evening’s gale the lamp was also washed away. Noticing that the light had carried away, and the danger thereby increased, Mrs J. Nathan, of Thames Road, braved the elements and installed another lamp of her own at the place. At yesterday’s meeting of the County Council it was decided to write to Mrs Nathan expressing the Council’s grateful thanks and appreciation of her prompt and thoughtful action. The New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board has been negotiating with the shipping companies, endeavouring to obtain a further reduction in beef freights, in view of the serious condition of the beef producers. The Board has now been advised that a reduction of per lb has been agreed tp and will operate from April 28 until October 31, 1923. The action of the shipping companies in meeting thj position is much appreciated by the Board, and will be welcome news to beef producers at the present moment. The payment made to suppliers from the Paeroa, office of the N.Z. Cooperative Dairy Co., Ltd., on April 20, 1923, amounted to £66,724, an increase of £31,612 over the same month (March butter-fat) last year. The butter suppliers received £55,806 and ■ cheese suppliers £10,918. The quantity of butfer-fat received also showed a considerable increase of 182,1731 b. There has been a gradual falling off in the supply of cream for April, due partly, no doubt, to the re- , cent flood. The quantity of butter manufactured for March was as follows : Paeroa 114 tons, Ngatea 162 tons, Waihou 124 tons. Market, prices are somewhat low at the present time, but it is anticipated that the market . will harden in the near future. The ] position is being closely watched by the company’s London manager (Mr J. B. Wright) and the managing director (Mr W. Goodfellow).
