A MODERN WONDER.
THE “ UNITY ” MILKING MACHINE. SIMPLE, EFFICIENT. ECONOMICAL. Recently a " Gazette ” representative called on Mr J. T. Brown, manager of the Paeroa Engineering Com pany. After chatting for a few moments Mr Brown invited the pressman along to the end of the big works, where lie was shown one of the famous "Unity” milking machines, fitted up complete and in full working order. Having a natural interest in machinery, the scribe was not slow to notice the many improvements of this milking machine, which was driven by an Anderson standard 21-> h.p. engine. These reliable engines are too well known to require any commui' Suffice it to say that it was driving a Masport pump through a friction pulley. The idea of a friction pulley on the pump is to enable the engine to be easily started without a load, and when once running, the pump can be set in motion by simply connecting the friction pulley a great idea, especially in cold weather. when the engine would be hard to start up with a load on. -This would also apply to a motor dnive, as the motors required for milking plants have no starting iesistance. As regards the “Unity” milking machine itself. The first of the many interesting points to arrest attention is the releaser. This is one of the latest model Droutlege 3-piece releasers. It is fitted wtih a milk pipe, which passes directly through the releaser itself, allowing easy access for cleaning. The construction of the milk pipe in the releaser prevents the action of the vacuum lifting the milk in the form of spray, thus giving an absolutely dry vacuum tank, a muchdesired feature in a milking machine. The vacuum tank itself i.s sanitary to a degree, and is easily and quickly cleaned. It is set at a convenient height, and is easily accessible. The automatic pulsator is of an improved design, and is simplicity itself. One important, advantage it offers is that it can be placed at any distance from the source of the vacuum and run at any speed independent of that at which the pump is driven. The speed of the pulsator is simply controlled by a tap,, and can be instantly adjusted while the machine is working. In addition to the pulsator which controls the pulsation in the cups, there is an independent pulsator for the mechanical releaser whicli prevents at any time the milk going back into the vacuum tank. The milk, in being conveyed from the cups to the releaser, is not bruised in any way, but comes through without the slightest trace of froth. This fact alone speaks volumes for its effi ciency, MILK PIPES.
The milk pipes are connected by ground joints, which ensures no leakage whatever, and there are no loose joints or crevices in which the milk can collect or congeal. VACUUM PIPES. The vacuum pipes are connected with special connections, composed of rubber ring joints in solid nickel fit tings. These, too, are easily assembled and cleaned. RUBBERWARE. All rubberware in connection witn the machine is of absolute first-class quality. TEAT CUPS. With regard to the “Unity” teat cups, our representative was very interested in this feature of the machine. The “Unity” teat cup consists of a rigid metal tube mounted with a niekel-plated copper cap, milk nipple, and air nipple, and encasing a rubbd“ gland. This rubber glan.t is the equivalent of the human hand in milking, except that it is more flexible. more gentle, and more persist-' ent. The action of the teat cup provides for both pressure and vacuum. Pressure is applied to the top of the teat, just as in hand-milking. This pressure holds the milk in the teat, gradually squeezing the whole way down, which ensures thorough milking without any possible injury to the cows. The milk claws are of the best brass nickled plateware, and are simple and sanitary. « In a milking machine absolute reliability is essential. The cows keep on giving milk right througn the season, and the milking machine must be equally regular in its work. To ensure that the ‘‘Unity” will stand long and constant service, only the highest grade material is used in every part of its construction. As Mr Brown remarked, the beautiful nickel finishes are more suitable for a draw-ing-room than a cowshed. 'The “Unity” plant can be fitted to any existing bails in a cowshed, and no expensive fittings are required. The machine will do efficient milking on a 12in vacuum. It is a very economical plant to run, and the price is well within the reach of any farmer’s pocket. The terms, too, are exceptionally easy where circumstances warrant. The Paeora Engineering Co., Ltd., have been appointed sole controlling agents of the “Unity” from Coromandel to Katikati as well as the Ohinemuri and Hauraki Plains counties. Installations will be undertaken by thf company’s skilled engineers, who carefully attend to all details in the erection of the machine and leave it in perfect working order. As Mr Brown says, “Seeing is believing.” Ha will welcome you to the Paeroa Engineering Co.’s premises, and will fie only too happy to demonstrate on the working model the many advantage;:, of the "Unity” milking machine.
