WORKS IN THE COUNTY.
ENGINEER’S REPORT. At the meeitog of the Ohinemuri County Council on Thursday last, the following report was submitted by the County engineer, Mr E. Shaw : The following works have been laid off and sent for approval : Forming and culvert, ing 49 chains of Sweatman’s Road, Waitawheta; making deviation of 5% chains (in rock) on the Wai! i-Whangamata Road.; and general improvements to the Golden Cross-Te Whariki track (under mines grant). This item has been approved and authority given, and as this work is urgent I have communicated with the settlers in the vicinity who are willing t.n carry out the work specified for the amount of the grant—£so, It was found necessary to extend the projection works in the Maratoto Creek by another 40 feet so as to further save the road from being washed away during floods. The principal bridge on the Waitnwheta Road has been dismantled and replaced with 36-inch concrete pipes, and a large wooden culvert on the Golden Cross Road has also been replaced with 36-inch pipes, the expense of the latter being mot by the mines grant. All the pipes used for the above were supplied from the county yard. A protection wall of reinforced concrete was placed on t,he main Wailv road where a washout had occurred at the mouth of a culvert during flood sonje time ago. During the month the Thames County Council asked if it was possible to hire the road roller for three or four weeks to scarify the road in the vicinity of Hikutaia. I saw the chairman on the matter, and it was decided, as we were not ready on our portion of the Thames Road., to let the Thames. County Council have same. They also have on loan the foreman of the Mangaiti riding to? the same period. In company with the chairmanmining inspector (Mr Paul), and Mr N. P. Kingswell (managing director of the Majestic mine, Maratotp), a visit was paid to the mine for the purpose of making an inspection of the Peels Creek Road. It was found to be in a bad state,, and after getting the assurance from the management 1 hat. they were going <tp test the reef system by putting down a bore it was decided that a sum of £2O be spent on the road. This work has been carried out and a large portioi of their required plant has gone forward to the mine. In company with the Public Works engineer (Mr May) an inspection cl the approach t.o the Victoria Street bridge was made, and after going into the matter he recommended that the work be entrusted to the Council at a ptice very much below the estimate submitted by the department, but up to date no reply has come to hand.
