OHINEMURI COUNTY.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Ohinemuri County Council met yesterday. Present: Crs. A. R. Robinson (chairman), A. D. McGuire, W. F. Johnstone, S. H. Morgan, J. Johnson, H. M. Corbett, and the county clerk (Mr R. W. Evans) and the engineer (Mr E, Shaw). RIDING BOUNDARIES. The Department of Internal Affairs wrote enclosing an extract from the N.Z Gazette containing a copy of the Special Order recently made by the Council altering riding boundaries and adjusting representation. The Special order to take effect as from March 31.—Received. TELEGRAPH LINES. Tiie District Telegraph Engineer advised that the Department intended erecting a line on the main road between Tirohia and Mangaiti. The department pointed out that as the ground was very swampy in places it would be necessary to place some of the poles well up to the edge of the road The Council was asked to allow its engineer to confer with the Department’s foreman and advise if the position of the poles would ’je acceptable to the Council. The engineer was asked tp attend to the matter. WATER RACE. ?.fr E. W. Porritt enclosed an application from T. M. Shore for a waiter race at Doherty’s Creek. He pointed out that, it was necessary for the water pipe to cross, the main road, and asked the Council to consent to this being done. —Granted, subject to the engineer’s approval. MANGAITI CROSSING. The District Engineer, N.Z. Railway Department, wrote in answer to the Council’s communication concerning the fence near the main road crossing at the Mangaiti railway station in which it was asked that the fence should be moved so as to reduce the risk of accident, and advised that the fence and trees had been removed and a post and wire fence substituted.
Cr.. Morgan moved that the Railway Department be thanked for the prompt steps taken in this matter.— Seconded by Cr. Johnson and carried. The chairman said he agreed with the motion. The Railway Department, was to be congratulated on acting so promptly. No doubt the Department realised.,the danger to life and limb with the fence as it was. OLD TE AROHA ROAD. Cr. Johnstone reported that the work done in scarifying the old Te Aroha Road was quite satisfactory. There was still about twelve chains to be completed. , The chairman said the balance of repairs to this road would be attended to as soon as practicable. MOTOR REGISTRATION. The secretary of the N.Z. Countie >’ Association wrote acknowledging a remit from the Council in- connection with the Motor Registration Act,. 1908, with reference to the registration and licensing of motors. The association advised that the remit would be scheduled in the agenda paper of the next conference. LOC'AL BODIES’ FINANCE.. . The “Board and Council,” published by the Municipal Association of New Zealand, intimated that by the int’-oduction by their commercial department of'their magazine, funds available for investment with lycal governing bodies had, in numerous instances, enabled satisfactory arrangements to be completed, as the resources at the command of that journal provided competition for local body debentures. Local bodies requiring loqn monies would therefore find it to their advantage to forward particulars of monies required, together with the necessary details regarding security, terms, etc. The advice was received, the chairman remarking that in the future the Council might have some heed for help.
The Workers’ Educational Association circularised the Council asking for a donation towards funds to enable its educational work to be carried on for the benefit of workers. On the motion of Cr. Morgan it was decided to donate the sum of £2 2s. BOUNDARY FENCE. Mr C. Burt,, of Waihi, applied for permission to erect a boundary fence, taking in a portion of the unused road along his frohtage of 20 chains on t,he old Tauranga Road.—Left in the hands of the engineer; WHANGAMATA-WAIHI ROAD. Mr J. Douglas wrote drawing the attention of the Council to the bad state of the Whangamata-Waihi Road between Ross’s and Parakiwai. The writer stated t,hat he had done some work on the Whangamata end of the road, and asked thh Council, if possible, to put a man on for a few days to fill in the worst of the holes,, so as to allow the settlers to negotiate the journey to Waihi with something like safety. The engineer said that this .man was a ratepayer to the Thames County. On the resolution of Cr. Corbett i f was decided to inform Mr Douglas that the Council was in sympathy with his application, but regretted that, the Council was> unable tp move in the matter. It was suggested by the engineer that this settler might quite well help .himself on this portion of the road REMISSION OF RATES. Messrs Ratliff and Son. of the Crown Quarry, Karangahake, drew the Council’s attention to the fact that they had assisted it by repairing a portion of the road, and had supplied metal and screenings free of charge for the footpaths in the township, and asked if the Council would be prepared to allow them a rebate on the rates owing by them in return for the work done and metal supplied, Cr. McGuire moved that the Council could not see its way clear te allow a remission of ratfs, as requested.—Carried. ' MING'S DRAIN. A. Vukusich advised that he has
taken up a section on Mill Road opposite the old silt works, and asked the Council’s assistance in clearing pur. the road drain tp the main outfall drain. Cr. Johnstone and the engineer were asked to look into the matter. ERECTION OF GATE. . J. Bunting applied for permission to erect a gate across Bunting’s Road near his residence on Wittner's property.—Granted,
