PAEROA GOLF CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Paeroa Golir'Club was held in the Soldiers’ Club on Tuesday evening. The chair was occupied by the President,. Mr A. R. Gorrie, and there was an attendance of about,2s members. REPORT. The following report and balancesheet was read by the secretary, Mr I. Towers : Membership'.—The membership of the club is now 94. Financial. —Your committee had t,o meet considerable expenditure during the year, and were greatly handicapped .by the amount of unpaid subf scriptions (£lB 15s) which had to be ' written off as irrecoverable. Your comjnittee worked on the assumption that all subscriptions would be and had such been the case there would have been a credit balance for the year of £l4 3s 9d, whereas there is a debit of £4 Ils 3d. Your committee was further handicapped at the commencement of the season by having to meet outstanding accounts for the previous year (not shown on last years’ balance-sheet) amounting to £9 10s sd, and owing to the first cutting of the fairways being unsatisfactory a second cutting at a cost, of £6.17s 6d was necessary. Permanent improvements absorbed the sum of £26 8s sd, £2O 3s 6d of this being the cost of enlarging the greens, a much-heeded improvement, and one which has been - very favourably commented on on all sides. / Inter-club Matches.—-The usual inter-club matches were played. Your committee is of opinion that these should be curtailed somewhat, as it is becoming difficult to fit in all the club fixtures when there are so many inter-club matches played. Club Competitions.—All the club competitions passed off successfully. The entries were good. The club championships 1 were won by Men’: Senior, W. S. Colbeck; junior, S' J. Hedge. Dadies-: 'Senior, Miss -Walmsley; junior,-Mrs Bain. Tournament. —An open tournament . \yas 7 held on June 3rd, and was a distinct success in spite of the unfavourable weather conditions. A profit of £2O 10s 9d was the result, and thethanks of. the club are due to all members xyhp worked so energetically to make it a success, and especially ... to the ladies, whose efforts were untiring. Your committee decided it would be inadvisable to hpld'a second tournament, owing to the inability of getting a suitable date and to the . fact that it would have incurred heavy expenses.. . Coaching.—The club was fortunate in' securing the services of James Watt as, coach, and the expenditure incurred was fully justified by the results that he attained. Watt’s services will be again available for the coming season. Ball.—A ball .was held during the season and proved a great success. A profit of £4 9s 10s was made, which ..was credited to the funds of the club. I Farewell. —During the season Mr A. White, a former president, left the district, and a farewell evening was tendered to him and' Mrs White. Scoring Cards. —Owing to the high cost of scoring cards and to the wastages in same, your committee were forced to adopt some means to counteract , and decided' to make a free issue of 12 cards to each playing member, ladies having the right to obtain another twelve free at the expiration pf,two months, and after that to charge one shilling per dozen for any further cards required by mem--bers. The matter, . will come up foldiscussion at the. generaT meeting. Local Rules.—Your committee recommends that a permanent local rule be made in respect of the race track to fairways; Subscriptions. — Your committee strongly recomhiends that .the subscriptions be increased. Present day ■ expenses are heavy, and during the past season it was found impossible to have the greens cut twice a week ../all through owing, to lack of funds, and it is essential to good golf that they should be cut at least twice a week. tl. is further . recommended, in view of the amount of unpaid subscriptions, that proposed new members sign a form of acceptance of nomination so as to avoid the position that has arisen during the past season. , .
Thanks.—The thanks of the club are due to the Ohinemuri Jockey Club for the use of their rooms and acces- . sories, and to the donors of trophies, and to the ladies , for assisting with afternoon teas and in club matters generally; also to the proprietor of “The Hauraki Plains Gazette” for publishing 'the results. of matches, etc.; also to Miss Dutton for typing, and to Mr E. Shaw for his courtesy to your committee. BALANCE-SHEET. Mr Blakeway, in commenting on the balance-sheet, said" the committee should be congratulated on the past
season’s working and the balancesheet. He pointed out that amounts total] ing some £36 would not be recurring. Discussing the matter of outstanding subscriptions, the president said that the committee had done all ir it power to try and collect the amounts, but unfortunately a number of persons had been elected without their consent, and refused to pay. This matter, however, was on the order paper to be dealt with later on. After a number of questions had been satisfactorily answeied by the chairman with reference to the bal-ance-sheet the motion was put and carried.
