THE PLAINS MATCHES. WAITAKARURU WINS BOTH. GRADES. Those who were fortunate enough to be able to visit Kercpeehi on Saturday last were able to witness what was undoubtedly the best exhibition of tennis that there has ever been on the Plains. The games were keen and hard fought, and though Waitakaruru finished ten points ahead of Tur.ua the games were closer than the score indicated. By winning on Saturday Waitakaruru gains the Laidlaw Cup, for Turua had previously beanten Kerepeehi and Kaihere, who have defeated Kopuarahi. The cup was held last year by Turua, with Hopai as runnerup. The following are the scores, Turua being mentioned first: • Men’s singles: F. C. Robinson lost to G. L. Griffiths I—9, J. L. Brownlee beat Smeeton 9—3, D. G. McMillan beat C. Stretton 9—6, F. Bell lost to A; Otter o—9. Ladies’ singles : Miss Darby beat Mrs Smeeton- 7-r-3, Miss Gill beat Miss Faherty 7—l. Men’s doubles : F. C. Robinson and J. L. Brownlee lost to G. L. Griffiths and Smeeton 6—9, D. G. McMillan and F. Bell beat k C. Stretton and A. Otter 9—B, P. Henry and G. Walker lost to S. McClune and N. Hedges 2 —9. Ladies Doubles : Miss Darby and Miss' Gibb lost to Mrs Smeeton and Mis’s Faherty 5—7, Miss Miller and Mrs McMillan beat Mrs Hedges and Miss Coxhead 7—4. Combined Doubles: Miss Miller and P. Henry lost t,o Mrs Hedges and N. Hedges 8— Mrs McMillan and G. Walker lost to Miss Coxhead and McClune 6 —9. Total. Turua 76, Waitakaruru 86. HAYWARD SHIELD FINAL. The final of the “B” grade competitions was also played on Saturday, and resulted in another win for Waitakaruru. This competition, for a shield presented this season by Mr W. G.J Hayward, president of the Hauraki Plains Tennis Association, has done much to bring on young players. Seven clubs entered for the first round, from which Kopuarahi and Ngatea emerged victorious, Waitakaruru won by default, and Turua drew a bye. In the second round Waitakaruru defeated Turua and Kopuarahi defeated Ngatea. The following are the scores in the final, Waitakaruru being mentioned first: — Men’s Singles: if. Fraser beat E. Ladies’ Doubles: Miss Vincent and Miss Harris lost to Miss Hinton and Miss Miller 2-—7, Mrs Otter and Miss Cpxhead beat Miss Hudson and Miss Candy 7 —3. Combined Doubles : Mrs Otter and F. Barker beat T. O’Carroll and Miss Hudson 7 —2, Miss Coxhead and N. Death lost to Miss Candy and L. Candy. TotalS 1 : Waitakaruru 84, Kopuarahi 68.
