POLICE COURT.
MONDAY, MARCH 12. (Before Mr J. H. Salmon, S.M.) MILITARY DEFAULTER. Harold Burgess, horsetrainer, was charged with failing to notify his change of address from Paeroa to Auckland while liable for military training, as required by the regulations Sergt.-Major Busby said that notice to parade had been posted to Burgess and it had come back marked unclaimed. Constable McClinchy stated that Burgess had been convicted for failure to attend drill in November last. Defendant was convicted and fined £2, costs 7s, in default 14 days in Auckland Gaol. UNREGISTERED FIREARMS. Cliftor Schulze, blacksmith, Paeroa, was charged with failing to register a double barrelled shotgun, as required, by the regulations. Mr Montague appeared for Schulze, and pleaded guilty. He stated that the gun had been obtained from a Mrs Hill (since deceased) and he was under the impression when he took the gun that it had been* registered. Joseph E. Clarke, of Paeroa, was similarly charged with being in possession of an unregistered gun. Mr Hanna appeared for Clark, and pleadjcd guilty. The gun in question had | been borrowed from Schulze, and he, too, was under the impression that the firearm had been registered. His Worship said that no doubt the matter of registration had been an oversight. However, the terms of the Arms Act must, be observed. Schulze and CLaike were both fined 10s, and costs Ils 6d.
APPLICATION FOR EXEMPTION. Louis C. Shaw, mail car driver,, in the employ of Brenan and Co., applied for a certificate of exemption from drill, on account of his occupation necessitating his absence from Paeroa each night. Sergt-Major Busby said the Defence Department did not. wish .to oppose the application. Exemption was granted as long as the applicant remained in his present occupation. ’ ‘
