PAEROA BOROUGH.
MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council was held yesterday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr P. E. Brenan), and Crs. T. P. Vuglar, F. E. Flatt, W. Marshall, G. p. Lamb, J. W. Silcock, W. Ba,in, E. Edwards, and D. Leach, and the Town Clerk, Mr W. C. Alexander. POWER BOARD ELECTION. In answer to an inquiry with reference to the forthcoming election of a Borough Council representative on the Board, the Thames Valley Power Board advised the Council that the Power Board election would be conducted under Section 8 of the Electric Power Boards Act., 1918. On the day of the election of its own members, each constituent district elected its power board member. Each electo • had one vote. It was electors—not ratepayers only, but all electors. Each local authority called for nominations and ran its own election for the power board. The voting papers were of a different colour from those provided for its own members. The returning officer of each local authority would act in the usual manner. Cr. Marshall suggested that the Town Clerk should look into the Act and see if it was not possible io charge the power board with a proportion of the election expenses. INSURANCE RATES. The Fire Underwriters’ Association wrote asking for information as to the progress made by the Council in the direction of reorganisation of the fire brigade, and"pointed out that the continuance of the present insurance classification of Paeroa required that , the standard of the brigade should be ragied by the provision of sleeping accommodation for one or more men and direct connection with the station by telephone. It was also pointed out that the present insurance rates and the grading of this town was conditional on the continuance of the present municipal and volunteer control of the fire brigade. It. was resolved that the association be advised of the steps that were being taken by the Council. FIRE STATION SITE. Mr L. C. Cane, of Corbett Street, wrote objecting, as a ratepayer and a resident of Paeroa, to the Council’s proposal to erect a fire station on a portion of the Domain, as he considered it •, was public property, and therefore should not be used for the purpose of building on. The matter was referred to the special committee for consideration and action. PEARSON FUND. The promoters of the Sir Arthur Pearson Memorial Fund submitted an extract from the Finance Bill, 1922, authorising local authorities to contribute towards the fund.—Received, and laid on the table. SEWERAGE CONNECTION. C. H. Pascoe, Arney Street, asked the Council to inform him when lie might expect his residence to be connected up with the sewerage system. The writer pointed out that he failed to see why lie could not have been connected up at the same time as other residents in Arney Street, and drew the Council’s attention to the fact that the . drainage contract at present being carried out was not being taken far enough to reach his house. The matter was referred to the engineer for an estimate as to the cost.
WATER SUPPLY. Cr. Flatt moved that the works committee should be asked to report to the next meeting on matters, pertaining to the water, supply, power to be given the committee to take such steps as were necessary to conserve the water supply. TAXI LICENSE. C. Burt, Waihi, applied for renewal of his taxi license. He informed the Council. that as he was a ratepayer to the Ohinemuri County Council he would request that he be granted his license at the ordinary fee of £1 2s 6d, instead of having to pay the full fee, £2 2s 6d.—Declined.
