ALIENS’ DODGES.
TO GET INTO ENGLAND. MAN OF QUICK CHANGES. The alien descent upon England, where, after Deceniber 23, the eptry of all aliens is governed by the Aliens Order, 1920’, is best seen from the point of view of an immigration officer at any of the*great ports; There are 150 p,f these alert young men, each speaking several languages, on the look-out day and night for the incoming foreigner.! Nearly a score of. immigration officers are required for a port like Southampton, where ingenious stratagems have been adopted by Germans and other aliens. One man turned up at. Southampton with; a wonderful story. He was, he said, the sop of a landed proprietor in the south of France ; lie was on a short visit'to an uncle, director of an 'hotel in Engr land. He went back as a waiter. In 48 hours he was at Newhaven ■with another story; but his record was there before him and he went back again. Before another day had passed he was at Dover, dressed in a smart astrakhan-collared coat, with white spats and a silk hat, posing as a pharmaceutical student. This time he was advised to waste no more money in trying to get into England. Included among the “students” who have been admitted are young men who have arrived to study British business methods and the Englisn language. Before the war such young men were present in bapks and business offices in large numbers, working for little or no pay.
