CANADIAN CATTLE BILL

SECOND READING. MAJORITY OF 352. The Bill to fulfil the pledge given by Britain to Canada to allow the importation of Canadian store cattle passed its second reading in the House of Commons with a majority of 352. Only 27 members went into the lobby against it, the minority being composed principally of the representatives from ( the North of Ireland. It is provided in the Bill that cattle on being landed either from Canada or Ireland shall not be moved except under license from a veterinary inspector, ; and* that before they are mpvled a second time they shall be detained for six days. It was explained by Sir Robert Sanders, Minister of Agriculture, that, this period of detention is insisted on because in investigating tile late very serious outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease the officers of the Ministry came to the conclusion that, its spread was due to Irish cattle being hurried from market to market after arrival in England. Ah amendment was inserted in the Bill providing that imported cattle should be branded.
