FRIESIAN CATTLE SALE.
300 GUINEAS FOR BULL CALF, i RECORD AVERAGE FOR N.Z. i Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., ! Ltd., report that the fourth annual sale of surplus stock held at Invercargill on Friday, 16th, on behalf Tif Mr W. D. Hunt, attracted a record attendance bf breeders from all parts of the Dominion. Although there was no competition from Australia this year for the Friesian cattle owing to the slump and the fact that many parts of that country are suffering from drought, a wonderful sale resulted. It may, therefore, be taken for grafted that the popularity of this breed within the Dominion is rapidly extending. Figures were supplied at the sale showing the wonderful productive powers of, the breed, j Twenty Friesian .cows and heifers ' have given over 800’lbs. of butter-fat ’ in the year, seven have given more than 909 lbs, and the best cow created a world’s record by producing 1145 lbs. of butter-fat in the year and giving birth to twin calves 16 days after finishing her test . I The top price of the sale was paid for the five months’ old bull calf ( Bainfield King Rozine, by Mr W. H. 1 Hoskin, of Mangatoki. Taranaki. This |, is' the champion butter-fat bred bull of Australasia. The records of his four nearest dams averaged 818 lbs. i of butter-fat. His (Jani gave 810 lbs. of butter-fat, his grandidam 820 lbs., ■ and his sire's two nearest dams’ re- 1 cords average 821 lbs. of fat. . A half ■ sister tested as 1 a heifer gave 806 lbs. ‘ of fat, his grand d,am 983 lbs, and he hp.s also a strain of breeding similar to that oif the cow, which gave 1145 lbs. of fat in the year. Other of the bu’l calves made up to 160 gns., and the 22 calves averaged £66 12s, 6d, the \ buyers representing the Auckland, Canterbury, Otago, and Southland provinces. I Last .year Mr Hunt offered a selec- | tion of his well bred heifers, and ( these averaged £lo's, at that time a record average for heifers. This re- | cord wa; easily beaten this year, as , the line of heifers, most of which t were yearlings, averaged £l3O 6s. The top price was 255 guineas, paid bv j Mr F. Smedley, of “ Sunnyhurst,” ! Auckland, for Bainfield Woodcrest Sylvia Pauline. This heifer is by Mr Hunt’s famous sire. Rosevale King Sylvia, whose first daughter tested, as a heifer, has given 806 lbs. of butter-
fabin the 1 year. Her dam was sired by another famous bull in Mr| John Donald’s (Wanganui) Woodcrest Piet.je Pontiac, three of whose daughters have given respectively 983 lbs. of fat, 923 lbs. of fat, and 821 lbs., so that this heifer was royally bred. Other highl priced heifers were sold to Messrs Bingley Bros., Papatoetoe, Auckland, at 170 guineas ; Mr P. F Bouchier, Kumeu, Auckland, .at 170 gn c .; Mr W. Y. Dickie, Southland,, at 150 guineas ; Mr T. Sherriff, Canterbury, at 130 guineas ; apd Mr C. JPayne, Dunedin, at 102% guineas. As already stated, the sale was a most successful one, the total received being £5445. This was an increase over last year of £l5OO. Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., are also able to announce that the aveiage price for the heifers is a record for all breeds for New Zealand.
