THE LAIDLAW CUP. , SECOND ROUND. ( 5 / ' The second rounds in the Laidlaw Cup and Hayward Shield competitions were played on Saturday. The weather war- dull and overcast, and a very strong wind was blowing; Rain commenced to fall late in the afternoon, but not sufficiently hard to stop play, as on each count the issue was still in doubt. The standard of tennis was high, and many long, hardfought games were witnessed. There was .only one Cup match, as Kopu forfeited to Turua. The Waitakaruru team journeyed to Kaihere and defeated that team by 80 pointe to 68. The following are the scores, Waitakaruru being mentioned first: — Men’s Singles.—G. Griffiths beat G. Paton, 9 —2 ;W. Smeeton lost to F. R. Brown, 6—9; C. Stretton beat H. Whitwell, 9—3; A- Otter beat O. Benny, 9—2. Men’s Doubles. —Griffiths and Smeeton beat Paton and Brown, 9—3 : C. Stretton, and Otter beat Whitwell and Benny, 9 —3 ;S. McClune and N. Hedges' lost to R. Paton and M. O’Connor, B—9.8 —9. ' Ladies’ Singles.—Miss Faherty lost to Miss Benny, I—7 ; Mrs Fraser lost to Mrs Boyd, I—7.1 —7. Ladies’ Doubles. —Miss Faherty and Mrs Fraser lost to Miss Benny and Mrs Boyd, 4 — 7 ; Mrs Hedges and Miss 'Coxhead lost to Miss Tizard and Miss Duffy. 2—71 Combined Doubles. —Miss Coxhead and S. McClune. lost to Miss Tizard and M. O’Connor, 6—7 ; Mrs Hedges and N. Hedges beat Miss Duffy and Paton, 7—2. / Totals.—Waitakaruru 80, Kaihere 68. ■ i Waitakaruru will therefore < mee*. Turua at Kerepeehi on Saturday, March 10, to play the final match. HAYWARD SHIELD. In the “B” grade competitions for the Hayward Shield Waitakaruru defeated Turua by 85 to 77 and Kopuarahi defeated Ngatea by 88 to 73. The second ladies’ singles and part of the combined doubles had to be abandoned owing to darkness. Waitakaruru will therefore play Kopuarahi on March 10, at a place to be-decided on by the association to play the final match.
