PAEROA BOROUGH.
MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held last Thursday evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr P. E. Brenan, Crs. T. P. Vuglar, F. E. Flatt ,W. Marshall, G. P. Lamb, D. Leach, W. Bain, J. W. Silcock, E. Edwards, and the Town Clerk (Mr W. CAlexander). RIVERS IMPROVEMENT. The Treasury Department wrote with reference to the Waihbu and Ohinemuri Rivers account, advising that the Council had short paid the sum of £1 7s 4d on its annual contribution of gold duty, and asking tor the amount to be remitted. It was decided to pay the amount forthwith.
SEWERAGE SCHEME. Messrs Lockie Gannon and Worley wrote with reference to the reticulation of the proposed sewerage scheme for No. 4 Area, and enclosed a plan showing the various grade,s and longitudinal sections. The estimated cost of the sewers was shown on. the plan, including the cost of material supplied by the Council, engineer and inspector of works was £10,895. Consideration was deferred. SANITARY MATTER. A resident of Station road wrote complaining of inattention to his’ dwelling house by the nightsoil contractor, and asked the Council to take action at once. —Referred to Health Committee.
SCAFFOLDING REGULATIONS. The inspector of scaffolding drew the Council’s attention to the provisions of, the Scaffolding and Excavation Act, 1922, which is to come into force in April o£ this year, and pointing out the duties of the Council in issuing building permits in the future. —Referred to Town Clerk for attention. BOROUGH ELECTIONS. The Under-secretary for the Department of Internal Affairs advised that an Order-in-Council had been issued extending 1 the time for holding the election until Thursday, April »26, owing to the statutory last Wednesday in April this year falling on Anzac day. EMPIRE EXHIBITION. The secretary oC the Auckland District Committee of the British Empire Exhibition asked the Council’s help and co-operation in the project by appointing a representative to assist in organising work. After careful discussion by the Council the Mayor consented to act. THE POWER BOARD. The manager of the Thames Valley Electric Power Board' advised that the voting powers of ratepayers would be different to those at the last election. At the coming election rate-, payers only would be entitled to one vote each for a representative on the Board.
BUTCHERS’ SHOPS. The assistant medical officer of the Health Department. (Mr John Boyd) drew the Council’s attention to the unsatisfactory state of two butchers shops in the borough, and requested that steps promptly be taken to have them cleaned up.—Referred to Inspector Franklin for his report. WOOD STREET FOOTPATH. The secretary of the District High S’chool Committee asked the Council to repair Wood Street footpath from the headmaster’s ’ gate to Victoria Stree v t corner. —Referred to works committee with power to act. OPUKEKO DRAIN. Kennedy Bros, and iine ethers applied for a subsidy towards defraying the cost of cleaning out the Opukeko drain. The usual yearly subsidy was granted, subject ,to the work being carried out to the satisfaction oif the foreman. JUNCTION ROAD. Cr. Flatt reported that the footpaths in Junction Road were badly in need of attention. —Referred to Works Committee, with power to act. ANZAC AVENUE. . Cr. Flatt asked that, the fence in Anzac AVeiue should be opened this month, to allow the residents to use the roaa.—Referred to the foreman. . HORSE BOXES. The secretary of the Ohinemur. Jockey Club applied for permission to erect 20 additional horse-h-xes on the Club’s property, along Raroa Street, in line with those previously erected. Messi’s E. W. Porritt, L. E. Casstels, and E. Russell objected to the eree- , tion of additional hors.Q-bo.xes on the Jockey Club’s property. Due consideration was given to the objections, but the Council did not consider they would be justified in refusing a permit. The application was granted, sub- . ject to certain strict condition and the usual by-laws being carried out. NOXIOUS WEEDS. Cr. Bain suggested that the Council should take slteps to cope with the blackberry menace in the streets of the borough, and asked that the Inspector of noxious weeds should be notified. Cr. Vuglar asked that the gorse between the National Bank and the old refinery should be cleaned up. These matters were left to the Works Committee, with power to act. FIRE STATION. Cr. Flatt asked that the amount of £3OO granted by the Council for the purpose of erecting a new fire station should be forthcoming, so that plans and specifications could be prepared, and the building be put in hand at the earliest, possible moment. —Referred to a special committee, comprising tlie Mayor, Crs. Flatt, Marshall, and Edwards, with power to act. LETTER BOXES. Cr. Edwards suggested that the Council should ask the postmaster to erect a pillar-box for the convenience of the residents at the junction of Quarry aiffi. Station roads, or at some other convenient position. Cr. Silcock said a pillar-box was badly needed in this vicinity, and he thought the Council should use Its best endeavours to obtain this most . necessary fixture. It was decided to make the request.
