THE MAYORALTY.
MAYOR’S INTENTIONS. NOT SEEKING RE-ELECTION. At last night’s Paeroa Borough Council meeting the Mayor (Mr P. E. Brenan) intimated that, he did not desire to seek re-election as Mayor at the forthcoming election. After four years of office lie was desirous of taking a rest; moreover, he considered the time' had arrived when he should afford the opportunity for some other gentleman to make good- in the pos - tion, if elected, who had the confidence of his colleagues. The Mayor suggested that the councillors' should discuss the question, with a view to ascertaining if one of their number was willing to accept nomination, and thus give the public a lead. Or. Vuglar said he regretted that His Worship did not propose to stand for re-election. But if that was the position, he had much pleasure m nominating Cr. Marshall. Cr. Flatt said he was sure that the councillors were unanimous as to the sterling qualities of the Mayor. He eulogised the work of the Mayor, but said he agreed with. His Worship that probably the time was pipe when another councillor, or an outsider, should be given a chance. In supporting the nomination of Cr. Marshall Cr. Flatt said there was no doubt as to the special abilities of that councillor, who had proved- himself the right-hand man of the Mayor. His (Cr. Marshall’s) knowledge Of finance and the borough works generally was exceptional, and he had done an enormous amount of genuine “spade work” in the interests of the borough. The speaker concluded by saying he considered that Cr. Marshall hgd ably served his apprenticeship, and was undoubtedly worthy of the support of the Council. Crs. Leach, Lamb, Silcpck. Bain, and Edwards also spoke highly of the work done by the Mayor during his terms of office, and expressed their regret at his decision not to seek reelection. Each promised loyal support to Cr. Marshall. Cr. Marshall feelingly thanked the councillors for their kind expressions of appreciation of 1 his humble efforts in assisting to carry out the administration of the Borough’s affairs. The speaker said it was unquestionably a loss to the Borough that His Worship should not seek re-election. He thought the ratepayers readily recognised the work done and services rendered to the Borough by MT Brenan. He (Cr. Marshall) said he felt it a very great honour to be asked by his' colleagues to contest the Mayoralty, and he would have very much pleasure in assuring, the councillors that he would be a “sure starter” for the coveted position. In concluding, Cr. Marshall said he was particularly anxious that His Worship should accept nomination in the rank and file of the Council. The Mayor said he would do all he could to assist Cr. Marshall, and he hoped the electors would accede to the wishes of the councillors in the selection of the candidate for the Mayoral chair. The speaker said he did not claim that the Mayor and councillors were the brains of the community; but he did claim that they were the best judges pf the most able, competent, and experienced workers. As regards accepting nomination as a councillor, he would- accede to their request, and offer his services. If elected, he would at ail times do his utmost to use his knowledge and experience for the betterment of the Council, and of the community as a whole.
