HIKUTAIA NEWS.

SOCIAL. The opening of the Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club concluded with a social, which was held in the hall on Saturday night. Things' went with- a swing that showed that the excitement of the opening day had not affected the capacity for enjoyment of the large number present. Dancing was kep- up till 12 o'clock, when a sumptuous supper was served, the hostesses' of the afternoon, Mesdames A. W. Alley, G. Avery, G. Collins, J.Elliot, I. M. Murdock, and M. C. Smith, being in charge of the arrangements, which were complete in every detail. The floor was in fair order, and as M.C. Mr F. Hill excelled himself. To the success of the social Mr Williams’ orqhestra contributed largely, and the dancers were loul in their, praise of the splendid music provided, the members of the orchestra being the recipients of many welldeserved compliments. The euchre competition was well contested, the card-playing being supervised by Mr I. M- Robinson. The winners of the prizes were (found in Mrs I Murdock and Mr D. Rumble. SALE OF PIGS. A very large trade is being done in pigs at present, the good price prevailing, 5d per lb,, tempting owners to get rid of their surplusage. On Monday a constant stream could be seen proceeding to the station ,whete were as buyers the Kiwi Bacon Co. and Mr Coates, bf Auckland. BOWLING GREEN SOIL. The destination of the large number of waggon loads of soil that are being taken from the Alley Memoiial Park to the station has evoked many inquiries. It seems that the soil is being used to form a new green, and top dress the present bowling greens belonging to the Thames <lub. The difficultly of securing suitable soil for bowling-green purposes thus seems to have been solved. A NECESSARY FOOTPATH. The necessity for forming a footpath—in continuation of the present one that ends at the school—tp the Memorial Park was very apparent on Saturday, when it was difficult foi pedestrians' to dodge tihe motor and vehicle traffic that was so abnormally great. PERSONAL. Mr Mitchell, landscape gardener, from Hamilton, visited Hikutaia last week in connection with laying out the etxensive grounds surrounding Mrs Corbett’s new house. Mr Mitchell had a look at the Alley Memorial Park, and was greatly struck with’ its potentialities as a beauty sport. To the names of the ladies who acted as hostesses last Saturday on the occasion of the official opening of the Hikutaia Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club, there should be added those o,f Mesd.ames Avery, Collins, and M. C. Smith, all of whom contributed greatly to the success of the function.
